ABOUT REFRAME

ReFrame Film Festival is a community celebration of documentary film and media art, centred on social and environmental justice. We aim to build socially active, engaged community audiences through the curated presentation of documentary film and media art.

We are committed to supporting and showcasing the work of documentary filmmakers and media artists, especially local creators and artists from equity-deserving communities; providing an accessible festival experience by working to dismantle barriers to participation; fostering dialogue around issues of social justice, human rights, and environmental responsibility; decision-making processes that are inclusive and guided by principles of anti-oppression; valuing and empowering employees and volunteers, and nurturing collaborative community partnerships.

CATEGORIES

ReFrame is a documentary film and media arts festival focused on social and environmental justice issues. We are seeking documentary films in the following lengths classifications: shorts (under 30 min), mid-length (30-60 min), and feature-length (over 60 minutes).

Submissions must be assigned two (2) of the following categories to be fully considered by our programming advisory committee:

ARTS & CULTURE
INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS
CLIMATE & ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
HEALTH, MENTAL HEALTH & ABILITY
INDIGENOUS SOVEREIGNTY & RIGHTS
GENDER EQUALITY & JUSTICE
ANTI-RACISM, POWER & LIBERATION
2SLGBTQIA+ RIGHTS

Please note: while these categories highlight some areas of focus that guide ReFrame’s programming, their function is also to provide structure to our review process. These categories are intended to be broad and encompassing. They cannot include all topics and features of social and environmental justice documentary work that we consider, including: intersectionality, youth action, education, ageism, intergenerational relationships, politics, technology, cultural expression, community-based storytelling, protection of biodiversity, ecological futures, ableism, stigma, access, addiction, criminalization, incarceration, housing precarity, Indigenous resistance and resurgence, lived experience, local and regional issues, contemporary and historic colonialism, cultural genocide, trans healthcare, gender-based violence, non-binary experience, white supremacy, systemic racism, bodily autonomy, freedom and many more…

Moreover, we are constantly learning through your work and want to engage with new ideas in justice; new themes and connections emerge from the submissions we receive every year. Please do not be discouraged if your work seemingly falls outside the categories listed, we want to review your doc! If you would like assistance, please contact submissions@reframefilmfestival.ca

Thank you for working within the limitations of the review process and our small team.

PAYMENT

ReFrame pays screening fees for all films selected for the festival. Fees are calculated according to the number of minutes and are compliant with the Independent Media Arts Alliance (IMAA) 2026 fee schedule.

We believe that art is work. We recognize the creative, emotional, and intellectual labour that goes into every film we show. We are especially committed to compensating equity-deserving and local artists in ways that reflect the immense value of their contributions. Wherever possible, we exceed minimum fee standards and seek out additional opportunities to support filmmakers’ participation.

Our short documentary "Inga" was selected for the SHARP ANGLES section. It was a very interesting experience, primarily because the organizers carefully watch and understand the films. This is not very common these days. Thank you!

Our film HOME was selected for ReFrame. The experience was remarkable. If you have a social justice film, this festival is for you. We arrived on a surprisingly wintry day. We wondered if many people would attend. When it was time to enter the theater, it was packed. We hosted a Q&A after the film. The entire crowd stayed for the panel. They were very engaged. The festival organizers communicated with us regularly. This made for a smooth event. This festival is great for newcomers and veterans alike. The audience in Peterborough was exceptional.

  • Feeling so thankful to premiere my first ever short doc, S.H.A.R.E., at this amazing festival! I can't say enough good things about their whole team - from staff, to board, to selection committee and volunteers. Everyone was so kind and encouraging, and there's clearly a strong community around ReFrame. Great communication from start to finish from Eryn, the festival's Creative Director. Fantastic planning, beautiful and professional venues, lovely merch, and an enthusiastic crowd with good attendance at every screening. Also loved the filmmaker social. And talk about the films! Some of the highest quality Canadian and international docs from the past two years screened here.

We had a Q&A after our screening - scheduled in between our short and the feature - which was so appreciated as it was still front of mind for the audience. Everything at this festival is done with respect for the filmmakers, audience, and community in mind! Can't wait for next year.

Excellent festival. The lineup of films was stunning and I am riding a sweet wave feeling part of such and outstanding array of work. They were lovely and communicative. There were some projection issues during a couple screenings and they handled it with grace. Audiences were super smart and I would go back for sure.
