The “Computer Animation / Film / VFX” category has been part of the Prix Ars Electronica since its very inception in 1987. It recognizes excellence in independent work in the arts and sciences as well as in high-end commercial productions in the film, advertising and entertainment industries. In this category, artistic originality counts just as much as masterful technical achievement.
The Prix Ars Electronica is the world’s most time-honored media arts competition. Winners are awarded the coveted Golden Nica statuette, prize money ranging up to € 10,000 per category and an opportunity to showcase their talents at the famed Ars Electronica Festival in Linz.
Works of 2D or 3D computer animation, digital short films and narratives, character animation, abstract CG animation, scientific visualizations, commercials, music videos, visual effects, CG for the creative manipulation or enhancement of live action scenes, real-time CG, game cutscenes, machinima, generative visuals, etc.
The work entered must have been created, realized or significantly updated within the last two years. Participants may be individuals, groups, institutions, companies etc.

The organizers and sponsors of the Prix Ars Electronica intend to make the results of the competition accessible to as large an audience as possible. To achieve this end, they intend to conduct a public relations campaign in print media outlets, radio and TV stations, and on the internet, as well as in various publications and by public presentations of the works.
The works singled out for recognition by the juries will be documented and/or published, as a whole or in part, in the following media:
- Catalog: “CyberArts – International Compendium Prix Ars Electronica” is a volume describing in texts and photographs the works selected by the juries.
- DVD/CD/BD (Blue Ray Disk): “Prix Ars Electronica CyberArts” features selected works honored by the Prix Ars Electronica, whereby the choice of the data storage medium (DVD, CD or BD) will be made according to technical criteria.
- Ars Electronica Website (www.aec.at)
- Ars Electronica Archiv ( archive.aec.at)
- The ORF will produce and broadcast a documentary TV program about the festival and the prizewinning projects.
If the submitted work is honored with a Golden Nica or an Award of Distinction, the material documenting it will be used in the catalog, DVD/CD/BD and on the Ars Electronica website. Accordingly, entrants are respectfully requested to prepare their images and texts meticulously and to submit them in the best possible quality. Furthermore, entrants hereby consent to participate in the production of the planned documentary TV program.
Catalog, DVD/CD/BD
The Cyberarts catalog and the DVD/CD/BD will be issued in conjunction with the Ars Electronica Festival. In order to promote the Festival and the Prix Ars Electronica, the website will go online in advance.
Due to technical and organizational constraints, the organizers of the Prix Ars Electronica reserve the right to determine the actual content, extent, timing and layout/design of the above-mentioned publications and documentaries.
Exhibitions and Presentations at the Ars Electronica Festival
The Prix Ars Electronica is an integral part of the Ars Electronica Festival, in conjunction with which the organizers intend to present, display or host a performance of the works honored by the respective juries. The organizers reserve the right to stipulate which works will be included in such exhibitions and presentations. The entrants hereby consent to making their works available for these purposes.
The organizers attribute particular significance to the Ars Electronica Gala, the evening ceremony at which the Golden Nicas are bestowed upon the winners, and to the Prix Ars Electronica Forum in which the winners of a Golden Nica and Award of Distinction deliver an approximately 30-minute speech elaborating on their projects. The entrants hereby consent to making themselves available to participate in these events.
Concerts and Performances at the Ars Electronica Festival
The organizers intend to stage a concert featuring performances of the prizewinning works in the Digital Musics & Sound Art category. The organizers reserve the right to stipulate which works will be performed at this concert, and the entrants consent to be available to perform their works at it.
Ars Electronica Animation Festival
An Ars Electronica Animation Festival with Electronic Theater (public screening) is staged each year. Entrants to the Computer Animation / Film / VFX category consent to convey to the organizers all the rights necessary to publicly present their entries in this context. Ars Electronica Linz GmbH also intends to present the Ars Electronica Animation Festival in other contexts. Entrants convey the right to Ars Electronica Linz GmbH to use the submitted works, as a whole or in part, for the production of a documentary BD, and this also includes the right to publically present this BD, as a whole or in part, at live events as well as, if it sees fit, to convey this BD to a third party for this same purpose. The exercise of this right is limited to activities carried out for the purpose of disseminating information about and/or promoting the Prix Ars Electronica, the Ars Electronica Festival, exhibitions staged by Ars Electronica Linz GmbH and other activities undertaken by Ars Electronica. Prior consent is required for any activities that go beyond this scope and/or constitute commercial usage.
Ars Electronica Archive
Ars Electronica Linz GmbH maintains an archive for the purpose of documenting digital media art and intends to make the contents of this archive accessible by interested members of the public both on site and on the internet. Entrants hereby consent to inclusion of all submitted material in the Ars Electronica Archive as well as to its public display both online and in the context of exhibits staged by Ars Electronica Linz GmbH.
Public Relations and Documentation
Entrants hereby consent to the submitted material, as a whole or in part, being used, stored to a data storage medium, and/or made public on the internet or via some other digital medium by Ars Electronica Linz GmbH or by a third party authorized by Ars Electronica Linz GmbH for purposes of public relations, advertising & promotion, documentation, archiving or scientific research. The exercise of this right is restricted to activities for the purpose of disseminating information about and/or promoting the Prix Ars Electronica, the Ars Electronica Festival, exhibitions staged by Ars Electronica Linz GmbH and other activities by Ars Electronica. Prior consent is required for any activities that go beyond this scope and/or constitute commercial usage. In using such works, Ars Electronica Linz GmbH will accord all due consideration to the entrants’ legitimate interests but assumes no statutory duty in this connection.
General Provisions
The organizers and sponsors, for their part, assure competition participants that the submitted works will be used only in the ways enumerated above. Any commercial usage by the organizers or sponsors outside of the scope of the Prix Ars Electronica is strictly prohibited. The artists retain all copyrights.
The rights conveyed to the AEC are unlimited with respect to their timeframe and their geographical location, but are limited to the purpose of the conveyance of rights.
By no means can an obligation on the part of Ars Electronica Linz GmbH to make public any submitted works be derived from the conveyed rights as specified here.
The entrant hereby declares that he/she is legally authorized to convey such rights to the extent specified above, that he/she has obtained any and all necessary consent from third parties as called for by regulations governing copyright, personal property rights or other such legal provisions, and that he/she is prepared to provide proof of such at any time if called upon by Ars Electronica Linz GmbH to do so.
Additional provisions with regard to rights granted within the framework of agreements concluded in conjunction with participation in the Prix or the Festival supplement the rights conveyed hereby but do not limit them in the absence of an express written agreement to the contrary.
This agreement elaborating the terms of participation in the Prix is governed by Austrian law with the exception of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and all norms serving as legal reference (Verweisungsnormen). The place of jurisdiction is Linz.
