A filmmaker-first festival built on packed screenings, thoughtful programming, and meaningful support for artists, Pendance enters its tenth year with renewed ambition.

For our anniversary edition, we are expanding the projected lineup by 250% and adding additional screening venues. This growth is intentional. We believe great films deserve great audiences, and this expansion comes only after years of careful planning and reflection.

Each winter in Toronto, Pendance presents a tightly curated selection of Canadian and international filmmakers. Across our first nine editions, we have proudly showcased the work of some of the most accomplished filmmakers in the world. If you are curious, take a moment to look up the filmmakers and reviewers featured below.

Our mission is simple: to champion bold storytelling and create a festival experience worthy of the films it celebrates.

Then there is the community. There is nothing quite like a Pendance connection. Filmmakers arrive open to collaboration and often leave with something rarer than a laurel: lasting friendships and creative partnerships. It may sound sentimental, but it is true. This festival attracts remarkable people.

Why Filmmakers Submit to Pendance

1) PACKED SCREENINGS

Our screenings are known for energetic and engaged audiences. Filmmakers do not travel across the world to screen their work to empty rooms. At Pendance they screen to a full house of directors, composers, critics, actors, and film enthusiasts. This is actually an audience of your peers.

2) A HIGHLY CURATED LINEUP

Pendance programs a small and carefully selected slate each year. Even as we expand our programming by 250% for 2027, the standard of curation remains strict. Every film is chosen because we believe in it and want to champion it. Whether it’s three minutes or three hours, a film is a film at Pendance, and we believe the respect and consideration we give to short films gives filmmakers confidence that their film won’t get lost in the noise at Pendance.

3) PROGRAMMERS WATCH EVERY SINGLE FILM

Every submitted film is watched in full by our programming team. No algorithms. No shortcuts. No volunteer test screeners used to bypass the process. Our programming motto is #StoryOverEverything. We don't care that a film had a huge premiere, a huge budget or a huge star. We program films that convey coherent arcs, innovative beats, creative audio-visual decisions and above all else, good stories.

4) A FILMMAKER-FIRST EXPERIENCE

From personalized communication to extended Q&As and filmmaker events, we treat selected filmmakers as collaborators rather than entries on a schedule.

We stand by our Slamdance-inspired motto of being a festival by artists for artists. Pendance alumnus receives free submissions and festival passes for life and we'll continue to share, plug and support your film well beyond the festival screening.

Panels, networking opportunities, and industry guests help filmmakers connect with producers, distributors, and fellow creatives.

5) THE LAURELS ACTUALLY MEAN SOMETHING

Programmers respect Pendance. We may not be the largest festival in Canada, but we established strong relationships with festivals across North America from the beginning and we have worked hard to maintain a reputation for thoughtful, air-tight programming.

An official selection at Pendance carries weight. Each year, filmmakers leverage that recognition as they move forward to hundreds of respected festivals around the world.

ONCE UPON A TIME

In 2015, we spent two years as filmmakers attending film festivals around the world. We took notes on things we liked and disliked about each experience. We created a journal called "the Filmmaker Dream Bible'. We wrote down every great and horrible experience and that became the blueprint for what would two years later become Pendance.

While 2020 tested us in ways we could not have imagined, we're reminded that between 2018-2020 we offered filmmakers more travel support than even Sundance and TIFF.

We're so incredibly proud to pour every dollar back into making this event a dream-come-true for filmmakers, and as we slowly get back on our feet financially we believe Pendance will redefine what film festivals can do for their filmmakers.

RULES & TERMS

(For Pendance Library rules, please see the section below.)

Main Competition — Submission Guidelines

1. Only films completed after January 1, 2024 are eligible.

2. Premiere Requirement (Features):
Feature films that have previously screened in Ontario are not eligible.
Short films currently have no premiere requirement.

3. Student Fees
Student submission fees are reserved for filmmakers currently enrolled in film school or who completed the film while enrolled. A valid student ID must be uploaded in your filmmaker profile attachments.

4. Please do not change the screener link or password after submitting. If changes are necessary, notify the festival immediately or your film may not be reviewed.

5. Films in languages other than English must include English subtitles. Burned-in subtitles are strongly preferred.

6. Selected films must provide a DCP for exhibition. If a DCP is unavailable, a ProRes file may be provided so the festival can generate a DCP.

7. All submission fees are non-refundable. Films that do not meet eligibility requirements may be disqualified.

8. Press kits are encouraged but not required.
Trailers, however, are required. If a selected film does not have a trailer, Pendance may create a promotional clip (maximum 60 seconds) strictly for festival marketing purposes.

9. Withdrawal Deadline:
Selected films may be withdrawn until December 28, 2026 to resolve potential premiere conflicts. After this date, films may not be withdrawn for any reason, including disputes regarding screening fees.

10. Films must not be publicly available online in the United States or Canada during the week leading up to the festival.

11. If required screening materials are not delivered in time, the festival reserves the right to retain the selection status but not screen the film.

12. Artificial Intelligence Policy

Pendance does not accept AI-generated video works. Filmmakers who used AI-assisted techniques in their production must disclose where and how these tools were used. This includes (but is not limited to):

- scriptwriting
- generative video
- generative audio
- post-production tools

Before submitting, filmmakers should email the festival with a complete description of AI usage and receive confirmation of eligibility. Selected films that contain AI-assisted elements must include a 10-second disclosure title card at both the beginning and end of the film. If one is not included, one will be added for you. If AI-use is suspected and emails for clarification are not answered, the festival reserves the right to disqualify the project and refund the submission fee.

13. Pendance will cover part of travel and expenses involved with attendance. This will include no less than $250 towards shorts filmmakers and $600 towards traveling features filmmakers. These are base minimums, and more may be offered based on financial need, embassy support and premiere status.

*Dates & Venue subject to changes and final confirmations will not be available until July 2026.

Pendance is a fantastic festival, very well run, and Rob is an incredibly thoughtful festival director who cares deeply about film and filmmakers. I wish I could have attended in person, but I was still able to engage with events virtually - I even had the opportunity to participate in a wonderful Zoom Q&A! I hope to have another film at the festival in the future. Thank you so much, Pendance, for including They Call Me The Tattoo Witch.

  • This festival and its organizers and volunteers are all extremely professional and go above-and-beyond for filmmakers. Thanks to their efforts, we had a sold-out screening and I had the chance to meet so many industry professionals and film fans. Their programming and events are stellar, and they provided so many resources to help support our film, including a portrait studio, networking events, panels, a closing gala, and fantastic social media engagement. Thank you, Pendance team!

Pendance Film Festival is a labor of love and it shows. It starts with the meticulous curation of films and their common denominator of the human factor, despite their thematic diversity. It is clear that this festival is realized by film lovers. The team's focus on networking opportunities, educational and inspirational workshops and panels and above all the aim of creating a community shines through every pore of this event. One feels welcome and appreciated. As a former festival programmer I found it furthermore impressive how they manage to sell out every screening - Pendance gets the importance of an audience at a festival, and the Q&As are a perfect opportunity to communicate. Last but not least the internationality of Pendance is another plus and I do hope that they continue down that path, keep up the good work and continue to grow! If you can, get your film into the festival and do visit!
