Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month following Indigenous People’s Day by participating in Hispanic Access Foundation’s Our Heritage, Our Planet Film Week: An annual celebration of the visual and storytelling traditions of Latino, Black, Indigenous, and people of color's voices and experiences in connection to our heritage and our planet - uplifting the nexus between our communities and the lands, nature, waterways, and ocean we all call home.

For the 3rd year in a row, Our Heritage, Our Planet Film Week is building a space where creatives, filmmakers, climate justice advocates, and others working on environmental topics can come, showcase, and celebrate, the stories of Latino, Black, Indigenous and other people of color in connection to Our Heritage and Our Planet - the lands, nature, waterways, and oceans we all call home. Our intention is to create and curate a space that celebrates their work, uplifts the common threads of our experiences, and provides additional opportunities for funds, employment, education, advocacy, and exposure for aspiring filmmakers of the global majority.

The festival is 100% virtual, free to attend for all, and will feature interactive discussions between artists, communities, and decision-makers on environmental topics.

Request for Applications for Film Week Mini-Grants
In spring 2023, Hispanic Access Foundation will be awarding mini-grants to BIPOC filmmakers for film projects that will be completed in 2023 and screened during Our Heritage, Our Planet FilmWeek. The mini-grants are as follows:

A $5,000 grant for a new short film that will be started and completed in spring and summer 2023 and screened during Our Heritage, Our Planet FilmWeek.This grant is intended to stimulate new ideas and stories, so it doesn’t support adaptations of existing material.A $2,500 grant to complete a project in progress that will be screened during Our Heritage, Our Planet FilmWeek.

How to Apply
Applicants must identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color). Film proposals may be Narrative, Documentary, Animation, or Experimental. Please state clearly in your application whether you are applying for option #1 (new short film) or option #2 (film project progress)While we accept applicants of any age, youth, students and recent graduates will be prioritized. Please disclose your age and educational status if you wish to receive priority status.

Applications must be submitted to conservation@hispanicaccess.org by March 31, 2023.

To apply for the $5,000 grant for a new short film:
Submit your resume.
Submit a link to work samples, previous projects, or a portfolio.
Submit a reference letter from a mentor, community leader, employer, or teacher in support of your specific film project.
Submit a 3-5 minute video outlining your background and proposed project. This video is intended to be creative and to showcase your personality and technical skills. It may be filmed on a DSLR, pocket camera, phone camera, or other comparable camera but should include an edited combination of all of the following:
the applicant speaking directly to camera
voice over narration
photos
b-roll footage
text elements
Submit short-answer responses to the following questions:
How does your film project demonstrate a commitment to telling BIPOC stories?
How does your film project address your chosen FilmWeek theme (Lands & Nature, Climate Crisis, EnvironmentalJustice, or Ocean &Watersheds)?
Submit an estimated project budget.This budget should clearly itemize all anticipated costs.

To apply for the $2,500 grant to complete a project in progress:
Submit your resume.
Submit a link to work samples, previous projects, or a portfolio.

Submit a treatment of the work in progress indicating which stage of the process you are at, or a sample (small trailer or a draft video) of the work that you have developed so far. The more you are able to share, the better.

How does your film project demonstrate a commitment to telling BIPOC stories?
How does your film project address your chosen FilmWeek theme (Lands & Nature, Climate Crisis, EnvironmentalJustice, or Ocean &Watersheds)?
Submit an estimated budget for each of the following (x2 total):
an estimated budget for the highest amount of funding available for your project’s stage (e.g. production: $5,000).This budget should clearly itemize all anticipated costs.

Filmmakers MUST:
1) Identify as a person of color or person of the global majority (for example, Black, Brown, Latino, Indigenous, Asian, Middle Eastern, Pacific Islander, nonwhite, or a person of color)
2) Choose ONE category for their film (see below)
3) Submit ONE film per filmmaker
4) Select ONE project type per film.
5)Provide One to Two film cover art/posters, and One film trailer submitted with materials
FILMMAKERS WHO DO NOT FOLLOW THESE STIPULATIONS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

Categories

We accept submissions related to the following categories:
1) Lands and nature
Cultural, religious, and ancestral connections to nature and the land; adventure stories; ecosystems and biodiversity on land; parks and protected areas on land; nature-based solutions; land-based natural resources; urban nature; traditional land management knowledge and practices; restorative agriculture; etc.

2) Climate crisis
Stories of climate hazards such as flooding, sea level rise, wildfires, hurricanes, extreme heat, or drought; climate risks to people, ecosystems, and biodiversity; climate solutions; urban sustainability; threats from fossil fuels and greenhouse gases; threats from plastics; climate governance; etc.

3) Environmental justice
Connections between pollutants and health; nature and health; correcting historic injustices; ties between racial justice, civil rights, social rights, and environmental and climate justice; just food systems; just transition; just recovery from the pandemic; etc.

4) Ocean and waterways
Cultural, religious, and ancestral connections to waterways and the ocean; ocean and water governance; water protectors; water and marine ecosystems and biodiversity; freshwater conservation; ocean and freshwater natural resources; water adventures; etc.

We welcome films produced internationally and multi-nationally. We understand that many of these categories overlap and ask you to submit to the category that you feel best fits your film.

Eligibility
Our Heritage, Our Planet Film Week accepts films in any genre with themes related to 1) Lands and Nature, 2) Climate Crisis, 3) Environmental Justice, and 4) Ocean and Waterways completed in 2016 or later.

We accept the following types of submissions:
Shorts - In order to submit to this category, the total running time of the film needs to be less than 40 minutes (including credits).

Features - In order to submit to this category, the total running time of the film needs to be 45 minutes or over (including credits).
Features and shorts may be Animation, Live Action, Documentary, Art/Experimental, or Narrative.

Commercials and Public Service Announcements - In order to submit to this category, the total running time of the film needs to be 60 seconds or less.

Webisodes - In order to submit to this category, the total running time must be 3-15 minutes in length, no more than 20 minutes.

TV Shows - In order to submit to this category, the total running time of the film needs to be 60 minutes or less (including credits).

How to Submit
Our Heritage, Our Planet Film Week is primarily a platform for showcasing the stories of BIPOC artists across the United States - learning, experiencing, and celebrating the connection between BIPOC communities and environmental themes. While the Film Week will not exclude films priorly screened, local, national, and international film premieres are encouraged. Please make submissions through filmfreeway.com by September 6, 2021.

Self-identification as a person of color / BIPOC / person of the global majority / nonwhite
One submission per filmmaker
One category per submission
Must ascertain that your film fits the overall OHOP theme and the daily theme to which they are submitting (Lands & Nature, Climate Crisis, Environmental Justice, Oceans & Watershed)
Must give permission to livestream/share recordings

Rule & Terms
Submission copies must be submitted online (no DVDs, Blu-rays, DCPS, thumb drives or other physical media will be considered).

All entries selected into Our Heritage, Our Planet Film Week grants the right to use film stills and portions of accepted films for promotional purposes.
