On the Outside (OTO) Film Festival returns for its third annual celebration with an exposition of Black greatness you will not want to miss.
This two day festival is a celebration of artistic expression, and the limitless possibilities of Black creativity. On the Outside Films is dedicated to platforming underrepresented Black archetypes in media. We focus on narratives that do not directly stem from traumas exposed to us through white supremacy because we want to show the world that we can simply be. On the Outside connects with Black filmmakers working across all mediums because versatility is where we shine. We believe future generations deserve to see Black artists, dreamers, innovators, and storytellers occupying every corner of the creative landscape.
Throughout the festival, attendees will also have the opportunity to engage with Black owned businesses and community organizations that are helping shape culture both on and off the screen. The festival experience extends far beyond film screenings. Attendees can participate in interactive activations that explore different areas of filmmaking, connect with fellow creatives through networking opportunities, and hear directly from established industry professionals during a featured panel discussion with accomplished Black filmmakers. VIP guests will also receive exclusive access to our festival afterparty at Strugglebeard Bakery in Hyde Park, where the celebration continues.
Selected filmmakers will be invited to participate in a filmmaker spotlight, sharing insights into their projects, creative journeys, and artistic perspectives through a curated conversation about their work. This year's theme, Foreground, is a visual and somatic exposition of the foundations of filmmaking. Who and what makes the final frame come to life sits at the center of this year's experience. From the artists’ audiences see on screen to the countless creatives whose work happens behind the camera, Foreground explores the people, craft, and collaboration that make filmmaking possible.
Step into the Foreground and experience a festival that shines a light on the film professionals, artists, and visionaries whose contributions deserve to be celebrated. Keep an eye out as we unveil this year's festival participants, panelists, vendors, activations, and special guests.
To honor the rigorous, yet rewarding work of the craft of filmmaking -- we will be granting an award to one filmmaker from each of the categories listed below! There will be 8 Recognitions Awarded during Opening Night of the 2026 OTO Film Festival.
