**SUBMISSIONS CLOSED | FESTIVAL THIS APRIL 17-19TH**

About | The NYU Sports Film Festival (NYUSFF) was created to showcase and celebrate the powerful intersection of sports and film. The festival is student-run and co-produced by the NYU Production Lab, the NYU Tisch Institute of Global Sport, and NYU Athletics, with support from NYU Tisch Undergraduate Film and Television and SNY.

“From Raging Bull to He Got Game to The Rider, NYU filmmakers have brought powerful sports stories to the screen. The NYU Sports Film Festival celebrates that great tradition.” – John Tintori, director, screenwriter, and Oscar-winning film editor

6th Annual Festival | The 6th Annual NYUSFF will take place from April 17–19th, 2026 at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Film Center on 8th St in Greenwich Village! Opening night will consist of a premiere screening of a new feature sports film with a Q&A with the Director & Crew. Stick around throughout the weekend for ground-breaking panels with sports industry experts and the opportunity to get your sports idea picked up at our 3rd ever Pitch Contest! Short films will be screened Saturday and Sunday, the nights of the 18th and 19th, and a special screening for NYU Sports Documentary Students during the weekend as well. We hope to see you there and catch your sports film on the big screen!

History | NYUSFF began virtually in 2021, partnering with SNY on a television special before evolving into an in-person, international film festival with awards and industry programming. In 2022, the festival featured speakers from HBOSports, NFLFilms, ESPN, and Religion of Sports, as well as acclaimed guests such as Billy Crudup (Actor: The Morning Show, Almost Famous, Without Limits), Reinaldo Marcus Green (Director: King Richard, Bob Marley: One Love), and Spencer Paysinger (inspiration for hit show All American). The 2nd annual SNY special broadcast multiple times, presenting four award-winning films and event highlights.

In 2023, the festival expanded with 12 official selections from around the world screened at Village East by Angelika, where honoree Q&As were held with Laurie Hernandez (Olympic medal-winning gymnast) and Jeremiah Zagar (Director: Hustle, We the Animals). Speaker panel participants included WME agents and award-winning sports film producers, and the festival's SNY special broadcast eight times, with selections re-screening at the Catalyst Content and Lake Placid Film Festivals.

The 2024 edition marked significant growth, with an expanded 19 official selections presented over two nights of screenings along with a filmmaker Q&A that attracted packed audiences at the prestigious Angelika Film Center. The honoree Q&A with Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence was a highlight of further events held at the NYU Production Lab, including a panel on Athlete-Centric Storytelling with Sports Emmy-winning editor Anthony Cortese, Associate Director/Associate Producer for CBS Sports Rachel Wagner, Emmy-nominated producer Ryan Heller, and NCAA D3 Champion Morgan Morrison. The festival introduced a Pitch Contest judged by producers representing sports media companies such as MSG Sports and Point Road Productions. The festival also screened films from NYU's inaugural Sports Documentary Course, hosted the first ever NYU Athletics Film Workshop, and again partnered with Catalyst Content and Lake Placid Film Festival for re-screening showcases.

The 2025 edition sustained the festival’s momentum with 12 official selections from submissions representing 22 U.S. states and 17 countries. The festival returned to the Angelika Film Center for a two-night run in April and opened with a panel on Diverse Mediums of Sports Storytelling, featuring Emmy-winning NBC anchor John Chandler, Spanish-language MLB and Jets commentator Clemson Smith Muñiz, actor Hunter Redhorse Arthur (Rez Ball, Killers of the Flower Moon), and Emmy Award-winning Fox producer Kiir Knight. The NYU Athletics Film Workshops doubled in size, and the Sports Documentary Course grew to 11 student films. The Pitch Contest featured 10 original project ideas, with live feedback from judges Dave Zigerelli (VP, Overtime), Noah Malale (Principal, Amazon Sports), and Alli Lank (Executive, Watch This Ready). Industry guests from MLB, NBC, FOX Sports, Overtime, and Amazon further elevated the program, and the annual SNY television special—set to air at the end of the summer—will showcase three standout films and festival highlights.

This 2026, NYUSFF is continuing to grow exponentially into a 3-night, international event, with new partnerships with PlayersTV expanding our Pitch Contest, a first-ever opening night feature film premiere, and the inaugural NYU Sports Photography Competition.

2) In order for a film to be considered for inclusion in the TV Special to air live in New York on SNY, the film must NOT contain any unlicensed or copyrighted footage or music/audio. Films from the NYU community that meet these requirements and can prove full ownership or licensing of all audio and visuals are automatically submitted for consideration unless specified otherwise, regardless of whether or not the film is chosen as an official selection.

3) Only short films (defined as under 30 minutes) will be considered for the SNY TV Special and other awards.

4) Only one (1) feature-length film (defined as over 60 minutes) will be selected and screened during the opening night of the festival.

5) Sport must be a central aspect of the film. (What qualifies as sports? Just about anything. Really. Whatever you think it means, we’re 99.9% sure we agree.)

6) All projects must have been completed within the past three years (submitted projects made before 2022 will not be eligible).

7) Films must be submitted through FilmFreeway along with a link to an accessible version of the video (mp4, MOV, AVI), and additional information and materials must be provided as requested to remain in consideration for the screenings and awards.

8) Projects selected for the festival in previous years are NOT eligible, though projects submitted in prior years that were not selected are.

Any submissions with more than three images will be disqualified. Images must be submitted in JPEG, JPG, or PNG format, with a maximum file size of 10 GB per submission.

Ten (10) officially selected photographs will advance to final jury judging. Once selected and approved, photographs will be featured online and may also be exhibited in a gallery at NYUSFF events.

If photographers of selected images would like to showcase their prints during the festival, they must provide their own physical prints for in-person display. Any selected images may instead elect to be shown online only if the photographer chooses not to provide a print. The NYU Sports Film Festival will not print any photographs.

The film festival is absolutely AMAZING! It's super well organized and I enjoyed all the events at the festivals. The selected films were screened at the Angelica Film Center which is one of my favorite theaters. It was also a great opportunity to talk to some sports industry people and meet all the filmmakers. 100% would come back again. Thx to all the organizers for this amazing event!
