North by Northeastern (NXNEU) is a Boston-based film festival whose mission is to create a platform for all creators in the Northeastern community to share their work on a broad scale. The festival seeks to make the works of these emerging creators accessible to students and residents in the local Boston area.

NXNEU is accepting submissions of video-based media of any genre or length via FilmFreeway. Submissions are open to all creators who are students, faculty members, or alumni of Northeastern University (additional details in Rules & Terms).

The submission deadline to have your work considered for NXNEU Film Festival is February 28, 2025. For extenuating circumstances in which a film cannot be submitted by the Regular Entry Deadline, please contact northbynortheastern@gmail.com. Unfinished or incomplete films may still be submitted for consideration to be included in the festival—please send an email to northbynortheastern@gmail.com if you are submitting an unfinished film with additional details about your project. Creators will be notified of their work’s inclusion in the festival on March 7, 2025.

Rules & Terms

There is no fee to submit work to NXNEU.

• Creators must be current students, faculty members, or alumni of Northeastern University.

• Submissions are not restricted to students from a particular college or major.

• Work submitted to NXNEU must have been completed in the last three calendar years (March 2022 - March 2025).

• Work submitted via FilmFreeway must be video-based but may be of any length or genre. This includes but is not limited to short films, featurettes, feature-length films, video animation, and music videos.

• Work submitted to NXNEU may be created in or outside of the classroom setting.

• Work that has been submitted to other festivals is still eligible to be submitted to NXNEU.

By submitting your work, you
1. give North by Northeastern (NXNEU) Film Festival permission to publicly showcase your work one or multiple times on the weekend of March 28th-29th 2025.
2. give North by Northeastern (NXNEU) Film Festival permission to use stills from your work for promotional purposes.
3. acknowledge that you have obtained all respective rights to your content.
