Justice Butler is a student who works with the homeless causes by helping others become more aware of the issues at her college and on her social network.
Justice knows first-hand about being homeless. When she first began taking classes at Houston Community College, Spring 2016 she still lived on the streets, slept on park benches, at bus stops, and even outside of business buildings, while looking for food. During her spring and summer term, she still held a sign at intersections asking for donations for food and a roof over her head at night. By the start of Fall 2016 term her grade point average dropped under a 2.0, where it threatened her school funds. With support now from many staff, faculty members at HCC, motorists, her social network, and homeless associates she not only made straight A’s at the end of the Fall term 2016, but she also made straight A’s, again this past Spring term.
Justice was grateful to have an article written about her in the school’s newspaper, which led to her being invited to speak about her homeless experience as a student at the second #RealCollege Convening Conference held in Philadelphia. That was another big honor as well as, being nominated for and a recipient of The Music Doing good award and being on the Dean’s list with a current grade point average of 3.3. Justice gives a lot of credit to some of the staff at HCC Central and HCC Alief campus for guidance and assistance with resources.
Justice Butler considers herself more than a Student, Activist, and Poet. She’s a messenger through her music poetry. She is a Communication in Media Arts major with an emphasis in film and plans to have her own entertainment company, start a non-profit organization for the homeless, as well as, them working for the organization and becoming a Congresswoman once after she graduates from a university. She feels there’s nothing she cannot do in life and she will accept the challenge.
