Based in Jackson, WY, the Mountains of Color Film Festival (MOC) creates spaces to showcase and celebrate BIPOC+ (Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQIA+) in outdoors, adventure, and conservation filmmaking to inspire our community and beyond to cultivate a welcoming and inclusive outdoor culture for all.

We seek to increase representation in outdoors media and build community for BIPOC+ filmmakers, outdoors enthusiasts, conservationists, and our allies. MOC is the first film festival of its kind, as no other outdoor and adventure film festival focuses primarily on BIPOC+ stories. It is a unique and empowering opportunity to learn about different perspectives, including highlighting people, nonprofits, initiatives, and companies that increase conservation and diversity, equity and inclusion in the outdoors.

In addition to nightly film screenings - built from a curated lineup of uplifting and inspiring stories that interweave adventure, the outdoors, and conservation with themes like connection, family, and belonging - the festival is expanding in 2024 to include special experiences for panelists to make meaningful connections with other BIPOC+ filmmakers, industry professionals, and potential sponsors, as well as filmmaking and photography workshops.

Submissions are open to BIPOC+-centered films and filmmakers (under 30min) that redefine how we showcase BIPOC+ people and their connection to nature. We support BIPOC+ approaches to storytelling, exploration, and celebration of our outside world. We are looking for applications that showcase a diversity of thought and perspective in front of and behind the lens. All films selected for screening will be notified of their status by April 21, 2024.

If accepted for screening, your film will screen at our festival in Jackson Hole on June 7-10th at the Jackson Hole Center for the Arts. Additional opportunities for your film to screen (on an opt-in basis) may include the MOC film tour, the Outside Festival, and Outside Watch.

A signature element of the MOC film festival is building up a vibrant community of BIPOC+ filmmakers, outdoors people, and conservationists to connect with and support one another. If accepted for screening, please plan to attend the festival. You will either be invited to join the festival as a panelist and be compensated and have travel and lodging costs covered, or as an attendee and be eligible for one of several BIPOC+ travel stipends.

Guidelines and Considerations:

Entry fees are non-refundable. Should the 2024 Mountains of Color Film Festival be canceled or postponed because of a natural disaster, pandemic, or for any other reason beyond our control, submission fees cannot be refunded.

Films of any completion date are eligible for submission. However, accepted films must not have been shown anywhere for more than a year.

MOC does not pay screening fees for the June 7-10 MOC film festival in Jackson, WY. However, if your film is selected, you will either be invited to join the festival as a panelist and be compensated and have travel and lodging costs covered, or as an attendee and be eligible for one of several BIPOC+ travel stipends.

Please indicate if you are interested in inclusion in the MOC film tour, the Outside Festival, and/or Outside Watch. If included, terms and applicable screening fees will be clarified by all parties before a decision is made to move forward.

Preview screeners and exhibition screeners must either be in English or have English subtitles. If accepted, we highly encourage Spanish subtitles.

Rough cuts are accepted for entry at the final deadline only. If you submit a rough cut, we cannot guarantee that MOC programmers will be able to review an updated cut at a later date. If you are submitting a rough cut, make sure it is indicated as such. Include the intended final running time and work remaining to be completed with your entry. MOC does not exhibit works-in-progress at the festival. Films must be completed by April 31, 2024 in order to be screened.

Acceptance to MOC does not guarantee selection for screening at the flagship festival (but could be included in the MOC Tour). Up to 10-20 films will be selected by the film review committee depending on MOC programmatic needs. Priority is given to films premiering in Jackson Hole.

Accepted filmmakers must have the following format available by April 31, 2024 for screening at the festival: h.264 (.mp4) file. All films screening at the festival must include a .srt file or a subtitled version of the film. The filmmaker is responsible for all shipping and insurance costs. DCP is NOT an accepted screening format.
