3rd Annual Mountain Maryland Film Festival
November 6–7, 2026

The Mountain Maryland Film Festival welcomes independent filmmakers of all backgrounds, including high school, college, and graduate-level students, emerging creators, and working professionals.

We are seeking distinctive and compelling short films in the following genres:

• Narrative
• Documentary
• Animation

Selected works will be curated into Student and Non-Student screening blocks, followed by audience engagement and filmmaker Q&A sessions.

Awards will be presented for:

• Best Narrative Short
• Best Documentary Short
• Best Animated Short
• Best Student Film
• Audience Choice Award

Located in the Appalachian Mountains of Western Maryland, the Mountain Maryland Film Festival takes place at the historic Palace Theatre in downtown Frostburg.

Now in its third year, MMFF continues to grow as a platform for student and independent filmmakers. Always in furtherance of our mission - “To bring filmmakers and audiences together to celebrate storytelling, creativity, and community through film" - the festival creates meaningful connections between artists and audiences.

Through curated short film blocks, filmmaker Q&As, and community engagement, MMFF fosters discovery, dialogue, and creative exchange in a welcoming, small-town setting.

We invite distinctive voices from around the world to share work that challenges, entertains, moves, and inspires.

The festival does not pay screening fees for short films.

The Mountain Maryland Film Festival will offer the following prizes:

• Best Narrative Short (TBD)
• Best Documentary Short (TBD)
• Best Animated Short (TBD)
• Best Student Film (TBD)
• Audience Choice Award (TBD)

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

• Films must have been completed in 2021 or later
• Minimum runtime: 3 minutes
• Maximum runtime: 20 minutes
• Foreign language films must include English subtitles
• Single episodes of web series ARE eligible
• Films currently available online ARE eligible
• Submit as either Student or Non-Student category

ENTRY FEE & SUBMISSION INFORMATION

Entry fee: $25 per film
Filmmakers may submit multiple entries (separate fee required per submission).

Each entry must include:

• Film synopsis (50 words max)
• Country of origin
• Languages spoken
• Film length
• Prior festival screenings / broadcast history
• Honors and awards (if applicable)
• Filmmaker contact information
• Director bio (100 words max)
• Personal statement (100 words max)
• Student or Non-Student designation

Entries without complete information may be disqualified. Entry fees are non-refundable.

The festival reserves the right to close submissions early if capacity is reached.

ENTRY FORMAT

Submit via FilmFreeway. Vimeo or YouTube links are strongly preferred.

Selected applicants will be expected to furnish digital copy of film in advance of the screening, .MP4 or .MOV preferred.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
The Mountain Maryland Film Festival is not responsible for late, lost, damaged or ineligible entries. Entrants will retain all ownership rights to their submitted films. By submitting to this festival, the entrant certifies that they have the legal right to submit and exhibit the film. The applicant is responsible and liable for any breach of rights or the law in the submission and exhibition process. By submitting your film, you give the Allegany Arts Council the right to exhibit your film at the Mountain Maryland Film Festival. Entrants may be required to sign an affidavit confirming that their film is original and that he/she holds all rights. All federal, state, and local taxes, and customs fees, when applicable, are the sole responsibility of the entrant. The undersigned assumes responsibility to ensure the submission payment information is complete and correct and agrees to reimburse the Allegany Arts Council and Mountain Maryland Film Festival for any additional fees incurred by incorrect submission payments, submission disputes, and credit card chargebacks. The undersigned shall indemnify and hold harmless the Allegany Arts Council for any and all fees, claims, liabilities, losses, damages, and expenses which may be incurred by reason of any claim involving submission payment disputes, copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or damage to the content submitted and/or screened. By entering the festival, the entrant grants the right to publish or transmit portions of the film for the purpose of press or promotion, unless otherwise noted. Additionally, entry constitutes permission to use winners’ name, likeness, and voice for advertising and publicity purposes without additional compensation. Void where prohibited.

    The Mountain Maryland Film Festival featured good communication, a welcoming community, a historic venue, and an enthusiastic audience. Overall, it was a great opportunity to both screen and watch a variety of engaging short films.
