The MIA Animation Festival

ANIMATION FESTIVAL CATEGORIES:

STUDENT COMPETITION
Best Student Project

Film submissions produced and directed entirely by students. The competition will focus on technical skills, storytelling and creativity. Students can submit individually or in groups.
To qualify, MIA ANIMATION Festival accepts submissions on the following categories:

1.Computer Animation, computer-generated imagery and/or digital production. This includes independent shorts, character animation, sponsored creative explorations, narrative and experimental works, opening sequences, game cinematics, selections and/or montages of animated television series, and new-media formats. Selections and/or montages of computer animation created for animated feature films.
2.Visualizations and Simulations. Computer animations created to explain, analyze, or visualize information for applications including scientific research, architecture, engineering, systems simulations, education, and documentary projects.
3.Miscellaneous. Computer animations that do not fit in any of the above categories, including technology showcases, previz, and other cool stuff that hasn’t been invented yet.

YOUNG DIRECTOR COMPETITION
Best Animation

Film submissions should be the director’s first or second production. The competition will focus on technical proficiency, originality, creativity, storytelling and cutting edge ideas. We are looking for the next big Director!

To qualify, MIA ANIMATION Festival accepts submissions on the following categories:

1. Computer Animation, computer-generated imagery and/or digital production. This includes independent shorts, character animation, sponsored creative explorations, narrative and experimental works, opening sequences, game cinematics, selections and/or montages of animated television series, and new- media formats. Selections and/or montages of computer animation created for animated feature films.
2. Visualizations and Simulations. Computer animations created to explain, analyze, or visualize information for applications including scientific research, architecture, engineering, systems simulations, education, and documentary projects.
3. TV and Web Commercials. Advertisements created entirely or partially with computer animation and/or digital effects. Also promotional spots, broadcast bumpers and graphics, and public service announcements.
Miscellaneous. Computer animations that do not fit in any of the above categories, including technology showcases, previz, and other cool stuff that hasn’t been invented yet.

THE PITCH TO THE INDUSTRY
General Information

MIA ANIMATION CONFERENCE & FESTIVAL will be holding a Pitching Contest as part of its Animation Festival. All creators are encouraged to submit their projects for consideration. The top submissions in both categories will be invited to pitch their idea in person to a panel of animation industry experts and professionals.

Categories:
1. Animation for Television and Web Series – targeting kids (any audience 13 and under)
2. Animation for Television and Web Series – targeting adults (any audience 14 and up)
Submission Guidelines:

A Pitch Document of no more than three (3) pages in length describing your project. This material can include series premise, character descriptions, story ideas, art and any other information that may be useful to the panel evaluating the project. Any information MUST be in ONE document (not multiple files) and needs to be three or fewer pages. Any submission not following these rules will be automatically disqualified.
An optional link to a video clip of not more than two (2) minutes of footage related to the project. If a video is longer than two minutes, the screening committee will only view the first two minutes in their evaluation process.

THE PITCH TO THE INDUSTRY
1st Place
The top pitch in each category will receive an award and recognition at the MIA Animation Festival screening. In addition, the top pitch overall will be set up with three meetings with relevant buyers and/or talent representatives, providing a great start to getting your pitch sold. Meetings will likely be in the Los Angeles area. No travel expenses will be covered.

REGULATIONS

MENTIONS: The producers and directors of award-winning films at the MIA ANIMATION FESTIVAL should mention the prize obtained, the year and the name of MIA ANIMATION FESTIVAL in the credits of their films and on all related documentation.

FILM DONATIONS: The MIA ANIMATION FESTIVAL welcomes the producers of prize-winning films and films in competition to donate a copy of their films to the Festival. These prints will be deposited within the Miami Dade Public Library’s Film Collection.

PROMOTIONAL USE OF WORKS: Unless otherwise indicated on the entry form, the entrant grants the Festival right to show, up to 10% of the running time of the production to a maximum of three minutes. The entrant also grants MIA Animation, LLC the right to use images from the entries in promotional materials, brochures, etc. and Festival merchandizing.

USE OF WORKS FOR BROADCASTING: Unless otherwise indicated on the entry form, the entrant grants the Festival the right to show the selected animation on WPBT2. The animation will be broadcasted from January 2018 – December 2018.

MEDIA CLIP RELEASE AGREEMENT – WPBT2

1. Community Television Foundation of South Florida, Inc. (“CTF”) is the owner of a series of programs entitled Art Loft (the “Program”), which will feature stories about the arts, artists and cultural community in South Florida. The Program will be broadcast locally and distributed online by WPBT2. Segments created for the Program may also be distributed nationally to other public television stations and as otherwise outlined herein.

2. Licensor hereby grants to CTF and its successors, assigns, licensees, and agents, an irrevocable license to incorporate and use the below described film, videotape, still photo, recording, compact disc or other media (the “Content”) in whole or in part, (including both the audible and visual portions thereof, and any music or other protected material as embodied therein), edited or otherwise modified as CTF elects, and to exploit the Content as outlined herein.

3. CTF shall retain all copyright with regard to the Program and the Content only as embodied therein during the license term outlined below (“License Term”), Licensor retains all copyrights in their individual Content. During the License Term, the Content shall be exclusive to CTF only for local broadcast of the Program on WPBT2, and non-exclusive for all other uses. The License during the License Term shall include all distribution means available to WPBT2 including, but not limited to, broadcast, internet, and all other media and by all means whether now known or hereafter created which WPBT2 might use to distribute the Program.

4. Licensor represents and warrants that it has the right to enter into this agreement, that the consent of no other person, firm, corporation or labor organization is required in order to enable CTF to use the Content in the manner described herein, and that CTF’s use thereof will not violate the rights of any third parties. Licensor shall indemnify CTF, its successors, assigns, licensees and agents from and against any and all claims, costs and expenses resulting from the use of the Content and/or any breach by Licensor of any of the foregoing warranties and representations.

5. Nothing herein requires CTF to use the Content.

ACCEPTANCE OF REGULATIONS: By agreeing to and/or submitting the entry for the MIA ANIMATION FESTIVAL, the participant accepts, without reservation, the items of the present regulations as stated in this document.
