ANIMATION FESTIVAL CATEGORIES:
STUDENT COMPETITION
Best Student Project
Film submissions produced and directed entirely by students. The competition will focus on technical skills, storytelling and creativity. Students can submit individually or in groups.
To qualify, MIA ANIMATION Festival accepts submissions on the following categories:
1.Computer Animation, computer-generated imagery and/or digital production. This includes independent shorts, character animation, sponsored creative explorations, narrative and experimental works, opening sequences, game cinematics, selections and/or montages of animated television series, and new-media formats. Selections and/or montages of computer animation created for animated feature films.
2.Visualizations and Simulations. Computer animations created to explain, analyze, or visualize information for applications including scientific research, architecture, engineering, systems simulations, education, and documentary projects.
3.Miscellaneous. Computer animations that do not fit in any of the above categories, including technology showcases, previz, and other cool stuff that hasn’t been invented yet.
YOUNG DIRECTOR COMPETITION
Best Animation
Film submissions should be the director’s first or second production. The competition will focus on technical proficiency, originality, creativity, storytelling and cutting edge ideas. We are looking for the next big Director!
To qualify, MIA ANIMATION Festival accepts submissions on the following categories:
1. Computer Animation, computer-generated imagery and/or digital production. This includes independent shorts, character animation, sponsored creative explorations, narrative and experimental works, opening sequences, game cinematics, selections and/or montages of animated television series, and new- media formats. Selections and/or montages of computer animation created for animated feature films.
2. Visualizations and Simulations. Computer animations created to explain, analyze, or visualize information for applications including scientific research, architecture, engineering, systems simulations, education, and documentary projects.
3. TV and Web Commercials. Advertisements created entirely or partially with computer animation and/or digital effects. Also promotional spots, broadcast bumpers and graphics, and public service announcements.
Miscellaneous. Computer animations that do not fit in any of the above categories, including technology showcases, previz, and other cool stuff that hasn’t been invented yet.
THE PITCH TO THE INDUSTRY
General Information
MIA ANIMATION CONFERENCE & FESTIVAL will be holding a Pitching Contest as part of its Animation Festival. All creators are encouraged to submit their projects for consideration. The top submissions in both categories will be invited to pitch their idea in person to a panel of animation industry experts and professionals.
Categories:
1. Animation for Television and Web Series – targeting kids (any audience 13 and under)
2. Animation for Television and Web Series – targeting adults (any audience 14 and up)
Submission Guidelines:
A Pitch Document of no more than three (3) pages in length describing your project. This material can include series premise, character descriptions, story ideas, art and any other information that may be useful to the panel evaluating the project. Any information MUST be in ONE document (not multiple files) and needs to be three or fewer pages. Any submission not following these rules will be automatically disqualified.
An optional link to a video clip of not more than two (2) minutes of footage related to the project. If a video is longer than two minutes, the screening committee will only view the first two minutes in their evaluation process.

THE PITCH TO THE INDUSTRY
1st Place
The top pitch in each category will receive an award and recognition at the MIA Animation Festival screening. In addition, the top pitch overall will be set up with three meetings with relevant buyers and/or talent representatives, providing a great start to getting your pitch sold. Meetings will likely be in the Los Angeles area. No travel expenses will be covered.
