2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (LAGFF). LAGFF presents a variety of film programs, both contemporary and retrospective, in Hollywood - the heart of the entertainment capital of the world. Filmmakers accepted into the festival take part in Industry one-on-one meetings with film industry professionals, allowing for dialogue and mentorship between filmmakers and working Hollywood professionals.

Documentary Films:
Launching in 2026, LAGFF-doc is the inaugural documentary edition of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, dedicated to celebrating documentary films from Greece, Cyprus, and filmmakers of Greek or Cypriot descent, as well as works exploring subjects related to these countries. The documentary festival LAGFF-doc takes place each year in January.

  • I want to share my experience with LAGFF 2025 – Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, which made me realize that its selection procedures lack sufficient transparency.

In the summer of 2025, my documentary “ANTHEA SYLBERT: MY LIFE IN 3 ACTS” (Link trailer: https://www.thedarkcandy.com/anthea-sylbert-documentary/ ) was selected as an Official Selection of the 19th Los Angeles Greek Film Festival 2025. I received the official selection letter in PDF and the laurels from the organizers. Up to that point, everything appeared to be progressing smoothly.

Shortly before the festival’s opening, on May 4, 2025, I received an email from the organizers informing me that my Official Selection for 2025 would be withdrawn, as all documentary screenings would take place exclusively online (virtual screenings). Instead, they proposed that my film be screened theatrically in Los Angeles at the end of January 2026, as part of the first edition of their new first edition of LAGFF-Doc festival, dedicated exclusively to documentaries, stating that they had particularly appreciated my film.

However, a few days ago I received another message from the organizers informing me that my documentary is no longer considered an Official Selection and will not be screened in January 2026 at the Los Angeles festival.

I have already contacted the organizers requesting clarification as to how and why the 2025 virtual screening was initially cancelled in exchange for a theatrical screening in 2026, which has now also been cancelled. To date, I have received no response.

This entire sequence of events leads me to conclude that the festival’s selection procedures are highly problematic, lack sufficient transparency, and in no way reflect professional standards. Inevitably, one can draw their own conclusions about an organization which, notably, also receives public funding from the Greek state.

It was a great honor for us that our film was selected to be part of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival.

Although we couldn’t attend in person, we deeply appreciated the way the festival embraced our work and created such a welcoming space for Greek cinema abroad. With gratitude, we send our warmest wishes for many more inspiring editions to come!

  • A stellar line-up and an enthusiastic audience too - we were delighted that our short film client 11:01 not only screened, but took home Best Short Film too!

  • WOW. That's what I call a Film Festival. I would rate it more stars than available. Fantastic atmosphere, awesome people, strong bonds, very well organized. I didn't want to leave. Definitely I will be frequent participant!

Superbly organized. Worthwhile networking. And a program of films that are unafraid to buck traditional "Hollywood" formulas.

Events take place all over Los Angeles. Because it's LA, the screenings were top-notch for picture and sound. Beautiful theaters.

While this is labelled as a "Greek" film festival, it feels more international. Filmmakers were from all over. That said, the features and docs coming out of Greece and Cyprus over the last decade are excellent.

The receptions after opening and closing nights were well sponsored and had fantastic food, wine and cocktails.
