On Monday May 4,1970 24-year old Sgt.Schafer shot an unarmed Kent State University Student Joseph Lewis jr. 20 with an M-1 Guard issued rifle at a distance of 71 feet. 20 year old Kent student Joseph Lewis Jr. was on the sidewalk to the entrance of the Taylor Hall building, when he turned, raised his arm and gave The Ohio National Guardsmen standing 71-feet away ‘His Extended Middle Finger’. Sgt.Lawrence A.Schafer testified in Cleveland,Ohio court that he "Feared For His Life" as Schafer believed that the unarmed 20-year old Joseph Lewis Jr. Kent University Student was charging at him and most likely meant Schafer harm. 20-year old Joseph Lewis jr. testified in Cleveland,Ohio court on that same day. The Kent Student testified that he in fact was not making a charge at Schafer. In fact the Kent Student testified that he was actually standing still 71-feet away and "Giving Schafer The Middle Finger" when Sgt.Schafer shot him in the abdomen and leg on Monday afternoon May 4,1970.
