I think I've always loved the poetry of motion. There's nothing quite like it. Every other artistic expression is limited to one or maybe two mediums. With film, we get everything - light and color, and imagery, and sound and everything in between.
I'm a filmmaker. I can't help myself. I keep trying to get away from the industry, then an idea or story catches my attention and I get reeled back in. I can't imagine doing anything else, and I've tried. I'll be broke living on the side of the road, looking for a way to fund the next one.
As I've written more and more I've discovered a deep love for blending truth and narrative where it is so close to life you're not sure what is real and what is fiction; poetically expressing the real life human moments we are all experiencing. I love making an ordinary moment cinematic: going to work, falling asleep at night, coming home from the hospital after a major surgery, struggling with quiet throes of depression, losing a loved one. They feel significant to the person in that moment, so let's make them big again and then learn to navigate them together.
On the other hand, I especially feel connected to politically driven science fiction stories that play out concepts of our current day to day life - What if we never address climate change? What if we never solve the energy crises? These stories are often infused with some of my biggest inspiration of thought leaders and of authors like Carl Jung, Allan Watts, Joseph Campbell, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams and Orson Scott Card.
When it comes to films I love the stories of Joachim Trier and Yorgos Lanthimos, the world building of Ridley Scott and the satirical look on society from directors like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Donald Glover, and Jordan Peele.
You can currently find me writing my next screenplay in a sunlit apartment in the strangely fitting neo-dystopian city of Reno, NV where small-town hospitality meets the historically seedy freedoms of lawless downtown with a backdrop of the striking beauty of high sierra desertscapes and mountain ridged lakes.
