Director Biography - Kevin Andy Stamps

Kevin Andy Stamps is a 35-year-old debut director and recent graduate of New York University. Joop is Kevin's thesis film project, a story based on a true story, offers a grounded exploration of love and relational challenges during life’s most difficult moments.

From a young age, Kevin was driven by a passion for narrative filmmaking. His career began in his early twenties when he started a business shooting cinematic wedding videos. Eager to expand his skills, he transitioned to commercial production, directing small-budget ad spots for local businesses like bakeries, coffee shops, and city events. His dedication to excellence in this field earned him several advertising awards.

After turning 30 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kevin realized he was not pursuing his true passion. He made the bold decision to return to narrative filmmaking, applying to New York University's undergraduate film program. After being accepted, Kevin quit his advertising job, sold his belongings, and drove across the country to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker.

At NYU, Kevin worked on over a dozen short film sets, with a particular focus on the camera and lighting departments. Outside of set life, he participates in writing workshops to develop his next projects. As an older student, Kevin has combined his life experiences with NYU's classical education, creating authentic, emotionally resonant stories that reflect the human experience.

Director Statement

The most rewarding films I’ve been a part of are those that connect to true human experiences. When it came time to make my thesis film at NYU, I knew I wanted to create something inspired by someone who has impacted my life.

As her brother, I've been able to witness as Jennifer has fought through some of the darker emotions of life and come out on the other side willing and wanting to share her journey along the way. This film captures a small part of her story. When it came time to cast the film, there was no one I could find that could quite embody the heart of these characters, which is when we decided to try something new and cast Jennifer and Mike to play as themselves.

This choice led to a film that displays the raw and sincere essence of Jennifer and Mike’s experience in a way I’ve never encountered as a director.

One of the most important aspects for me was portraying Jennifer’s emotional journey. To do this, we used experimental imagery and visual styles to immerse the audience in her emotional landscape throughout the story.

Both Jennifer and Mike are musicians, so incorporating music the duo had written and performed became a crucial element of the film.

It’s been an incredible opportunity to bring this story to life and share the journey of someone I deeply admire. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it.

Thank you,
Kevin
