The Hindsight Film Festival is looking for historical documentary films that uncover untold stories and interpret our shared past from fresh perspectives. Our inaugural event will take place March 5th - 8th, 2026, at the Otis S. Johnson Cultural Arts Center, located in the heart of historic downtown Savannah, Georgia. Visitors will experience idyllic springtime weather in the "Hostess City of the South".

We're working with nationally recognized documentary filmmakers, major distributors, and our presenting sponsor The Better Angels Society (Library of Congress Lavine / Ken Burns Prize for Film), to select the most bold and evocative non-fiction stories being told right now. And we’re partnering with local community groups and academic institutions to build a diverse audience of all ages.

Our call for submissions is open to features, series, and shorts from around the world on any historical topic. Every screening will be followed by a Q&A, led by experienced moderators and interviewers. A core part of our mission is to foster and encourage the next generation of historian filmmakers by prominently featuring films from high school and college students, alongside established filmmakers.

Our program will also include expert panels with award-winning filmmakers and historians, filmmaker masterclasses, guided history tours outside the theater, an awards ceremony, and social events and networking opportunities throughout the festival.

We are a festival built by filmmakers and designed for filmmakers. Submit today and become part of our groundbreaking annual event that honors filmmakers who bravely excavate and interpret history through the lens.

Best Short Film
Best Student Film
Best Editing
Best Cinematography
Best Sound Design
Best Use of Archival Material
Best Discovery (of an untold story)
Best Revision (of a well-known story)

An awards lunch will be held on Sunday for all attending filmmakers, VIP pass holders, and single event ticket holders. Hindsight Film Festival reserves the right to alter award categories based on submissions received. All films submitted through our call for entries will be considered "in-competition", while some curated selections or works-in-progress may be presented as "out of competition". Cash prizes are not being offered at this time.

ELIGIBILITY
We have no restrictions on premiere status, either festival, theatrical, broadcast, or online. Films should have been completed within the last 5 years. Newer films will be given higher priority, but selections will ultimately be made based on quality and their fit within our overall program. Works-in-progress are encouraged, along with an explanation of what will be completed in time for the festival.

*Short Films: 40 minutes or less
*Features: Over 40 minutes
*Episodic Series (up to 2 episodes of the series)
*Fees are non-refundable
*Competition is open to U.S. and International entries
*Films not in English must be subtitled with English subtitles

What qualifies as a "historical" documentary?

We're looking for non-fiction films that explore specific events, figures, or issues and how they have made an impact on the course of history. Films may include contemporary characters or non-historic topics, but the majority of the film should be about or strongly connected to a topic that occurred at least 10 years in the past.

Films about the process of historic exploration or preservation will also be considered, but should aim to be accurate and informative about a specific topic.

All styles of non-fiction filmmaking will be considered, including educational, observational, first-person exposition, autobiography, participatory, reflexive, poetic, performative, hybrid and even docudrama (but not mockumentary). Storytelling devices can include narration, interviews, archival footage, research, primary and secondary sources, reenactments, animation and more. We want traditional educational films as well as original formats that defy categorization.

Promotional and sponsored films will not be considered.

We were so honored to have our The Memories of Others selected for Hindsight Film Festival. Though we weren't able to attend in person, the experience of being included was meaningful in itself — and that's a testament to the culture Pat has cultivated around this festival. The communication, care, and enthusiasm from the team made us feel genuinely welcomed even from afar. Pat has clearly built something special, and we hope to experience it firsthand one day. Thank you for championing historical film sand for making us feel like a part of the Hindsight community!

  • This festival fills an important place in the fest ecosystem! It honors historical films and their filmmakers. It was very well run (especially when one considers it was its first year!) and the lineup of films was fantastic. I was honored to have my film in it. Also got big name filmmakers and subjects to the event which was great. Nice gatherings and perks (parties, award brunch, even awesome historical tours of beautiful Savannah, Georgia) I loved it. Many thanks to everyone who made it happen!

Was very happy to screen two shorts of mine at the inaugural Hindsight Festival. Didn't get a chance to go but Pat is great and I'm sure this will be a good festival to attend for many years to come.
