The Hindsight Film Festival is looking for historical documentary films that uncover untold stories and interpret our shared past from fresh perspectives. Our inaugural event will take place March 5th - 8th, 2026, at the Otis S. Johnson Cultural Arts Center, located in the heart of historic downtown Savannah, Georgia. Visitors will experience idyllic springtime weather in the "Hostess City of the South".
We're working with nationally recognized documentary filmmakers, major distributors, and our presenting sponsor The Better Angels Society (Library of Congress Lavine / Ken Burns Prize for Film), to select the most bold and evocative non-fiction stories being told right now. And we’re partnering with local community groups and academic institutions to build a diverse audience of all ages.
Our call for submissions is open to features, series, and shorts from around the world on any historical topic. Every screening will be followed by a Q&A, led by experienced moderators and interviewers. A core part of our mission is to foster and encourage the next generation of historian filmmakers by prominently featuring films from high school and college students, alongside established filmmakers.
Our program will also include expert panels with award-winning filmmakers and historians, filmmaker masterclasses, guided history tours outside the theater, an awards ceremony, and social events and networking opportunities throughout the festival.
We are a festival built by filmmakers and designed for filmmakers. Submit today and become part of our groundbreaking annual event that honors filmmakers who bravely excavate and interpret history through the lens.

Best Short Film
Best Student Film
Best Editing
Best Cinematography
Best Sound Design
Best Use of Archival Material
Best Discovery (of an untold story)
Best Revision (of a well-known story)

An awards lunch will be held on Sunday for all attending filmmakers, VIP pass holders, and single event ticket holders. Hindsight Film Festival reserves the right to alter award categories based on submissions received. All films submitted through our call for entries will be considered "in-competition", while some curated selections or works-in-progress may be presented as "out of competition". Cash prizes are not being offered at this time.
