The FREE SPEECH AWARD offers all 6 Official Selection Award-winning filmmakers extensive networking opportunities and a long-term marketing platform for greater exposure and visibility.
Championing diverse perspectives and understanding different points of view are crucial for Democracy’s future. For more than a decade, hundreds of FREE SPEECH FILMS from over 86 countries have brought this mission to life.
Students enrolled in our online course, “Make History Every Day!” will discuss our past Free Speech Award-winning films, and explore how Free Speech, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law are expressed globally through the lens of independent filmmakers for years to come!

Each Official Selection Winner is showcased for a month in our newsletter, on our Free Speech Spotlight Blog posts and social media channels, plus a personalized SPEAK EZ recorded interview that will be seen and studied by students for years to come.
One FREE SPEECH AWARD-Winning Director is chosen from the final 6 Official Selection films as by a distinguished panel of 10 Free Speech Judges, and this Director receives a $1,000 honorarium.
Submissions must be completed films, independently produced, and free of commercial broadcasting or distribution. Ineligible films include those with incomplete edits or containing content deemed inappropriate by our selection committee, such as violence, porn, hate speech, or defamation.
To qualify, all films must meet the following SUBMISSION GUIDELINES below:
- Include a trailer either in English or with English subtitles, vertical and horizontal posters, a website, a social media presence, and a cause that conveys the filmmaker’s commitment to inspiring change.
- Films must remain independent and retain NO distribution rights throughout the submission and judging periods.
- Free Speech Award-winning Directors are invited to participate in ourSPEAK EZ interview series, both on camera and in print, as well as to submit a 60-second selfie video answering “What Does Free Speech Mean to Me?”
