International LGBTQ+ film festival based in Florence, Italy.

Founded in 2003, the festival hosts feature films, documentaries and short films, as well as talks, panels, live performances and social events. Over the years, it has hosted prestigious guests such as Lindsay Kemp, Drusilla Foer and Eytan Fox.

The festival is organized by IREOS, a volunteer association that’s been operating in Florence since 1997, and which is focused on the health and psychological well-being of Florence’s LGBTQ+ population, and with the support of public institutions and private sponsors.

1. RULES AND REGULATIONS

The 22nd edition of the FLORENCE QUEER FESTIVAL (one of Italy’s main LGBTQ+ film festivals) will take place in Florence, Italy, from November 27th to December 1st, 2024.

Our festival aims to promote queer-themed feature films, short movies and documentaries. By doing so, we more broadly aim to promote the values of inclusion and diversity, which are at the very core of our work.

The festival is organized by IREOS, a volunteer association that’s been operating in Florence since 1997, and which is focused on the health and psychological well-being of Florence’s LGBTQ+ population. The festival is organized with the support of public institutions and private sponsors.

The Festival’s program consists of two international competitions (one for feature films and documentaries, and one for short films), of non‐competitive sections, and of special events.

Submissions to the festival are subject to the payment of an entry fee detailed as follows:

FEATURE FILMS and DOCUMENTARIES INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: 20 €
FEATURE FILMS AND DOCUMENTARIES: NON-COMPETITIVE SECTION: 20 €
VIDEOQUEER: SHORT FILM INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: 10 €
QUEER ANIMATION: ANIMATED SHORT FILM INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: 10 €

2. INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM COMPETITION (FICTION & DOCUMENTARIES)

a) To be eligible, works must have been completed after July 1st, 2023 or been screened publicly for the first time after that date. The festival artistic committee reserves the possibility of choosing older works, in exceptional circumstances.
b) There are no restrictions regarding themes or genres. The only requirement is the focus on LGBTQ+ stories.
c) Length must be over 30 minutes.
d) Works that have been submitted to the Festival’s previous editions will not be accepted.
e) The selection and screening schedule are the sole responsibility of the Artistic Committee of the Festival.
f) Submissions are subjected to an entry fee of 20,00 €.

3. INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM COMPETITION

a) Short films should be under 30 minutes. The festival artistic committee reserves to be able to screen longer works, in exceptional circumstances.
b) To be eligible, works must have been completed after July 1st, 2023 or been screened publicly for the first time after that date. The festival artistic committee reserves the possibility of choosing older works, in exceptional circumstances.
c) There are no restrictions regarding themes or genres. The only requirement is the focus on LGBTQ+ stories.
d) Works that have been submitted to the Festival’s previous editions will not be accepted.
e) The selection and screening schedule are the sole responsibility of the Artistic Committee of the Festival.
f) Submissions are subjected to an entry fee of 10,00 €.

4. INTERNATIONAL ANIMATED SHORT FILM COMPETITION

a) Animated short films should be under 30 minutes. The festival artistic committee reserves to be able to screen longer works, in exceptional circumstances.
b) To be eligible, works must have been completed after July 1st, 2023 or been screened publicly for the first time after that date. The festival artistic committee reserves the possibility of choosing older works, in exceptional circumstances.
c) To be eligible, at least 50% of the film length consists of any animation techniques and have to focus on LGBTQ+ stories.
d) Works that have been submitted to the Festival’s previous editions will not be accepted.
e) The selection and screening schedule are the sole responsibility of the Artistic Committee of the Festival.
f) Submissions are subjected to an entry fee of 10,00 €.

5. INTERNATIONAL NON-­COMPETITIVE SECTION: RULES FOR SUBMISSION

a) There are no restrictions regarding the date of production.
b) There are no restrictions regarding themes or genres. The only requirement is the focus on LGBTQ+ stories.
c) The selection and screening schedule are the sole responsibility of the Artistic Committee of the Festival.
d) Submissions are subjected to an entry fee of 20,00 €.

5. HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK FOR CONSIDERATION

a) All works should be submitted online through the official entry form on FilmFreeway.
b) Please provide a link to the film on a streaming service. The link should be operative until May 31st. The Direction of the Festival will not disclose screeners of submitted works under any circumstance.
c) Italian or English subtitles are required. An English or Italian dialogue list (preferably in .srt format) should be sent along with the film entry. The Festival production team will be in charge of the translation. The rights of the translated subtitles will remain property of the Festival.
d) Please provide a short synopsis of the film on your entry form
e) Please provide biography and filmography of the director

6. SELECTED WORKS – REQUIRED MATERIAL

In case of selection, the following materials must be supplied no later than one week from notification:

a) Screening copy in one of the following formats: DCP, Bluray, DVD, or high definition digital files such as.mov or .mp4 format
b) at least 4 photos from the selected movie in jpg/tiff/eps format at 300 dpi
c) 1 poster in .jpg format (high quality file)
d) 1 movie trailer that will be used to promote the screening through our social media accounts

7. WORKS IN COMPETITION -­‐ SCREENING COPY DELIVERY

a) Shipping costs of the selected movies screening copies are on the sender. The festival will pay for returning the copy once the festival is over.

b) Digital files will have to be sent through WeTransfer to the following e-­‐mail address: staff@florencequeerfestival.it

c) Files heavier than 2Gb will have to be shipped via postal/courier service on electronic equipment (Bluray, DVD, Hard Drive, USB Pen) that will be returned to sender once the Festival is over

8. JURY

a) Juries will be selected by the Artistic Committee and will be formed by at least three people each
b) People directly or indirectly involved with the movies in competition will not form part of the jury.

9. AWARDS

During the closing night, the juries will award the following prizes:

a) Best feature film/documentary Award
b) VideoQueer Award for best short film
c) Queer Animation Award for Best Animated Short Film
d) Pride Award, for the best short or film that highlights activism and visibility
e) Special Mentions

Winners will receive special awards uniquely designed for the Festival, but no cash prizes

10. GENERAL RULES

a) Works submitted and selected cannot be withdrawn from the competition
b) Every author is responsible for the content of own work and declares to be the owner of all rights (direct and indirect) on the work itself.
c) By submitting your work for consideration, you imply the acceptance of every part of the present regulation
