Held annually in October, Flip the Script is a nine-day film festival that celebrates Queer stories from 2SLGBTQIA+ filmmakers all over the globe!

Returning this October 11–19, 2024, we will continue to present a hybrid festival with in-person screenings at Emagine Willow Creek, and extended virtual access through our Virtual Cinema hosted by Eventive!

OUR MISSION
Flip the Script’s mission is to remove barriers to access Queer film!

We believe quality representation should be accessible for all and that financial means should never keep filmmakers from submitting their films or audience members from participating in our programming. Providing access to subsidized FREE tickets, passes, and submissions fees, to everyone, is the cornerstone of our organization and supported by donations made through our fiscal sponsorship with Springboard for the Arts.

WHY WE DO IT
Who and what we see on screen affects our community, the entertainment industry, and even legislation. Too often in film, Queer folks are seen in tragic or powerless situations. We’re working to flip that narrative by showcasing stories that inspire us to envision ourselves and the Queer community without restrictions.

ABSOLUTELY NO PHYSICAL COPIES ARE ACCEPTED FOR SUBMISSION.

SHORT FILMS are classified as having a runtime of 1–45 minutes in length.
FEATURE FILMS are classified as having a runtime of 60–120 minutes in length.

We define “queer films”, in this context, as projects that include characters, storylines, ideas and/or are directed, produced, or written to subvert the norm of representation. In order to qualify, we ask that at least one member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community was involved in the making of your submission.

All submissions must be in a visual format of 1080p or greater quality, 24fps, 25fps, or 30fps, and be 1-120 minutes in length. All films must be submitted digitally, via links on Vimeo or Youtube or an attached digital download in MP4, WMV, AVI, Quicktime, or Apple ProRes format. All films should be in their final form. Any films that have a significant amount of non-English dialogue must include English subtitles. Filmmakers must have the rights to their films, and through submitting thereby grant the Flip the Script Fest the right to screen their film.

All submissions received by May 1, 2024 will be reviewed for Flip the Script Festival’s 2024 programming (October 11-19, 2024). All applicants will be notified of inclusion or otherwise by July 26, 2024. After receiving a contract for inclusion, all chosen applicants will need to return a signed copy of the contract to Flip the Script Festival by August 9, 2024.

Final copies of accepted films must be received by August 23, 2024, with a daily fee of $5 for copies received after. Films received on September 13th, 2024 and after may not be shown due to inadequate time to prepare and test.

The Festival is unable to waive entry fees or provide discounts beyond those indicated. Entry fees are not refundable. You may submit any number of titles; however, a separate entry form, preview copy, and entry fee are required for each title. If the Festival determines a work is entered in the wrong category and needs to reassign it, any discrepancy in entry fees between the categories must be paid by the filmmaker.

  • Flip The Script does something that's almost unheard of (in the film festival world)... they offer screening fees! WHAAA? The festival communication was fantastic. The engagement with the community increases every year. This is a great festival that is only going to get better and better each passing year. I highly recommend. :-)

Reviewing from my coproducer's account bc he submitted our film Erica's First Holy S*** from here, but I want to chime in and say how much I loved attending the fest and love this crew! It's a young festival, but these folks have a real passion for queer films and really care about filmmakers. They have worked hard to present us with good opportunities and get us paid for our film and appearances. And their crowd is really sweet and open :) I attended with our star, Erica Nix, and they found space for Erica to teach her aerobics class, made room for our weird performance desires, and really did their best to cater to our specific needs. They also brought us back to MinneapoIis for Pride weekend! So much fun! I made real friendships here. Expect down to earth communication with a genuine, enthusiastic, and welcoming community 💚💛🧡❤️️💜💙🖤Love you, Flip the Script!😽💕

  • Really loved being part of Flip the Script Fest! It's so exciting and emotional knowing "Asians Have Feelings Too" had its US premiere with you. Due to access, I couldn't get out much so I also really enjoyed watching the films by other filmmakers online and feeling part of a happening! Thank you!

  • My queer dark comedy short played at Flip the Script Fest and won an audience award! How cool. This festival is really well organized and incredibly communicative. Not to mention they provide paid opportunities for their filmmakers! Don't sleep on FTSF!!!
