The groundbreaking Festival O has firmly established Opera Philadelphia not only as “one of North America’s premiere generators of valid new operas” (Opera News), but as “one of American opera’s success stories” (New York Times). The annual twelve-day event featuring world premiere new works, grand opera productions, site-specific performances, and special events, underscores Opera Philadelphia’s status as “a hotbed of operatic innovation” (New York Times), once again “reaffirming that classical music has a legit place in 21st century American art” (Denver Post).

The highly anticipated Festival O22 (September 21-October 2, 2022) will celebrate both the return to multiple live performance venues in Philadelphia as well as the opera industry’s recent bold foray into cinematic opera necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Live audiences will enjoy a selection of feature-length and short-form opera films on multiple screens at the Philadelphia Film Center, the city’s premier hub for film. Producers and artists are invited to submit their film projects for consideration to be screened alongside classic opera films and recent cinematic works created for the Opera Philadelphia Channel.

All films chosen for Festival O will be considered for streaming on the Opera Philadelphia Channel and other distribution opportunities.

How to Enter
Opera Philadelphia’s Festival O22 prefers paperless entries. Our 2022 exclusive partner entry portal provides cost-saving, online entry to major film festivals throughout the U.S. and in Europe with one master entry form, allowing you to enter your film more quickly and with greater accuracy. Online entries via FilmFreeway are free.

Criteria
This is a festival of opera on film (and we’re cool with whatever that means to you; let’s see what you’ve got). Each work is juried solely on its own merits. Festival O seeks any combination of inventive, bold, and otherwise provocative work. Works in progress can be considered; but submitter should note that it is a work in progress.

Rules & Entry Formats
We welcome submissions of films of various length. Please provide the date the film was completed.
To submit a film, you must own the rights and have permission to have the film screened in a theater.
Entries for adjudication must be submitted as digital files on FilmFreeway (there is no submission fee)
Formats accepted for exhibition: Digital H264 Media.
Films must be presented in their original language with English language subtitles.

Agreements
Opera Philadelphia does not pay screening fees. By submitting a film to this festival, the entrant is giving consent to allow Opera Philadelphia to screen it if selected.

Submission of a work confirms that Opera Philadelphia has permission to exhibit it during Festival O22. Submission of a work implies that Festival partners can employ moving image excerpts and reproduce stills for exhibition promotion.

Deadlines
Festival entries must be submitted by May 15, 2022. If your film is accepted, the film/video prints are due no later than August 15, 2022, to Opera Philadelphia offices.

Jurying
All entries are initially reviewed by pre-screening officials. In June, the jury will consider the pre-screeners' semi-finalists and any other entries submitted to the Festival they may wish to see (even those not passed on by the pre-screeners.) Following the jurors' decisions, a list of Finalists will be determined by the first week of July 2022. Acceptance of films to be invited and shown at Festival will be communicated via e-mail. Opera Philadelphia does not offer feedback on submissions, nor is it our policy to notify submissions of acceptance or rejection before the official notification date.

Publicity
If your film is invited to screen at Festival O, please submit whichever of the following materials you have immediately upon notification of acceptance to better aid in Festival publicity of your work: Digital sets of B&W and color stills; an electronic press kit including synopsis, movie poster, and artist headshots; digital video clip and/or trailer as an mp4 or MOV file.

It was an honor to participate in this inaugural Opera on Film Series as part of Opera Philadelphia's Festival O. An excellent experience in all respects for Arizona Opera and THE COPPER QUEEN.

A fantastic film festival in the heart of Philadelphia! Thank you, Opera Philadelphia, for showcasing our two comedic operas, "Someone Like Me" (The Facebook Opera) and "Rumspringawakening" (The Amish Opera), at your inaugural event.
