FRONTDOC is an international documentary film festival dedicated to the theme of borders — geographical, political, social, and cultural — and to works that push the boundaries of documentary by exploring new forms of storytelling and hybrid languages.
Founded in 2008, the festival has been shaped over the years by the vision of figures such as Luciano Barisone — former director of the Festival dei Popoli and Visions du Réel — and Carlo Chatrian — former artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival, and currently director of the National Museum of Cinema in Turin. Their leadership has contributed to establishing the festival’s strong curatorial identity and international perspective.
Open to documentaries of all kinds and lengths, FRONTDOC particularly values films that engage with its central theme through bold, personal, and innovative perspectives.
Over time, the festival has grown significantly, expanding both its audience and its international reach. Today, FRONTDOC stands out as a vibrant platform for contemporary documentary cinema, presenting outstanding works from around the world, highlighting emerging talents, and showcasing films that challenge conventions and redefine the genre.
At its core, FRONTDOC is more than a film festival: it is a space for exchange and dialogue. Through screenings, debates, workshops, and special events, it fosters encounters between filmmakers and audiences, between cultures and experiences, and between different ways of seeing and interpreting reality.
The next edition of FRONTDOC will take place from **October 19 to 25, 2026**, in Aosta — a unique Alpine crossroads between Italy, France, and Switzerland, whose border identity perfectly reflects the spirit of the festival.
Over the years, FRONTDOC has welcomed internationally renowned artists such as Leonardo Di Costanzo, Alberto Fasulo, Michelangelo Frammartino, Lech Kowalski, Pietro Marcello, Giovanni Cioni, Daniele Gaglianone, Salvatore Mereu, Gianfranco Pannone, Nicolas Philibert, Sabina Guzzanti and many others.
Recent editions have further enriched the program with distinguished guests including Claire Simon, Gianluca De Serio (with Massimiliano De Serio), Paolo Mereghetti, Vallanzaska and Pietro Bartolo, reflecting the festival’s openness to different artistic and cultural perspectives.
The most recent editions have confirmed the festival’s growing success, with a strong audience response, an increasingly rich and diverse program, and numerous premieres presented for the first time in Italy or Europe.
FRONTDOC is organized by APA Vd'A, bringing together a community of filmmakers and professionals who collectively shape a festival designed by filmmakers, for filmmakers.

FRONTDOC è un festival internazionale di cinema documentario dedicato al tema dei confini — geografici, politici, sociali e culturali — e alle opere che esplorano nuove frontiere del linguaggio, tra documentario e altre forme espressive.
Nato nel 2008, il festival è cresciuto negli anni grazie alla visione di figure come Luciano Barisone — già direttore del Festival dei Popoli e di Visions du Réel — e Carlo Chatrian — già direttore artistico del Locarno Film Festival e della Berlinale, oggi direttore del Museo Nazionale del Cinema di Torino — contribuendo a definirne una forte identità curatoriale e un respiro internazionale.
Aperto a documentari di ogni genere e durata, FRONTDOC privilegia opere capaci di affrontare il tema dei confini con uno sguardo originale, personale e innovativo.
Negli ultimi anni il festival ha conosciuto una crescita significativa, ampliando il proprio pubblico e rafforzando la propria presenza nel panorama internazionale. Oggi FRONTDOC è una piattaforma dinamica per il cinema del reale contemporaneo, capace di presentare il meglio della produzione internazionale, valorizzare nuovi talenti e proporre opere che ridefiniscono i confini del genere.
FRONTDOC non è solo un festival, ma uno spazio di incontro e confronto: tra autori e pubblico, tra culture e linguaggi, tra esperienze di vita e visioni. Proiezioni, dibattiti, workshop ed eventi speciali rendono il festival un luogo vivo di scambio e partecipazione.
La prossima edizione si terrà dal **19 al 25 ottobre 2026** ad Aosta, territorio naturalmente vocato al dialogo tra culture, crocevia tra Italia, Francia e Svizzera, nel cuore dell’Europa.
Nel corso delle sue edizioni, FRONTDOC ha ospitato importanti protagonisti del cinema e della cultura internazionale, tra cui Leonardo Di Costanzo, Alberto Fasulo, Michelangelo Frammartino, Lech Kowalski, Pietro Marcello, Giovanni Cioni, Daniele Gaglianone, Salvatore Mereu, Gianfranco Pannone, Nicolas Philibert, Sabina Guzzanti.
Le edizioni più recenti hanno visto inoltre la partecipazione di ospiti come Claire Simon, Gianluca De Serio, Paolo Mereghetti, Vallanzaska e Pietro Bartolo, a testimonianza dell’apertura del festival a linguaggi e ambiti diversi.
Le ultime edizioni hanno confermato il successo crescente della manifestazione, con una grande partecipazione di pubblico, una programmazione sempre più ricca e internazionale e numerose anteprime presentate per la prima volta in Italia o in Europa.
FRONTDOC è organizzato da APA Vd'A: un festival ideato e realizzato collettivamente da filmmaker per i filmmaker.
An Official Jury composed of professionals in the field of cinema and documentary filmmaking will award the following prizes:

The Youth Jury, composed of students, will award the same prizes:

**YOUTH AWARD – BEST FICTION SHORT FILM – F(r)ICTION**
In addition, the festival will present:
**AUDIENCE AWARD** – assigned by the public
**BORDERLESS AWARD** – assigned by the Borderless Jury, composed of young people with migrant backgrounds
The **SPAZIO X** section, dedicated to VR and experimental cinema, features its own dedicated jury, which will assign multiple awards to the selected works.
Special Mentions may also be granted. The number and nature of the awards may vary depending on the final structure and budget of the festival.
All selected films will receive the official FRONTDOC certificate.

**PREMIO BORDERLESS**, assegnato dalla Giuria Borderless, composta da giovani con background migratorio
La sezione **SPAZIO X**, dedicata al cinema VR e alle opere sperimentali, prevede una giuria dedicata che assegnerà diversi premi alle opere selezionate.
L’organizzazione si riserva la possibilità di attribuire ulteriori premi e menzioni speciali.
Il numero e la tipologia dei premi potranno variare in base alla struttura e al budget definitivo del festival.
Tutti i film selezionati riceveranno il certificato ufficiale del festival.
