Eat Our Shorts is NAHEMI’s annual unique festival of student films, that celebrates emerging talent and reflects the types of films that are being produced in UK film Schools and Universities today. It brings together students, staff from Higher Education and members of the industry to showcase some of the best films produced. This is our opportunity to present the excellent work produced by students since September 2024.

There will be three screenings in which members of the audience can vote for best films, plus an overall winner voted for by a panel of film experts. You will also have the opportunity to hear from the filmmakers in a live Q & A as they collect their awards.

Animation, non-fiction, experimental and drama genres are all welcome. Members should submit a single film of no longer than 12 minutes, or a programme of films totalling no more than 12 minutes in running time, including credits. If they wish, members can submit one film that is longer than 12 minutes, which can be included at the discretion of the festival organisers, in place of their shorter film or programme of films. However, they must also submit a film of 12 minutes or less, which will be screened should it not be possible to schedule the longer film. These films are selected by the tutors in our member institutions and can be submitted by a member of the teaching staff or students to FilmFreeway, but permission from the tutor is necessary. An email must be sent to chair@nahemi.org listing the films chosen by the tutor representing their institution for inclusion in the programme.

The Eat Our Shorts screening will take place at BFI Southbank Cinema, London, NFT2, on December 5th. Details will be announced nearer the time.

This year, there will be a Best Film Winner for each screening as voted by the audience; plus, an overall winner, decided by a panel of film experts, presented in honour of our Executive Funke Oyebanjo who taught at LCC and passed away this year.

Before submitting, it is important that the instructions below are followed carefully to avoid delays or disqualification.

It was an amazing day with so many fantastic films. We were so delighted to win the AUDIENCE AWARD the first time the film has screened in front of a public audience.
