  • I applied to this festival as soon as it opened, a Friday the 13th convention with an attached film festival? I had a new slasher short ready to go and this seemed like a perfect fit! I paid the $30 fee and applied, it was a steeper price than I would normally pay, but this was a Friday con! And the price obviously meant a high end experience... right?
When I applied on FilmFreeway it was stated that I would receive two free weekend passes, but about a week before the convention I got an email from the Festival Director that gave me a discount code to buy a ticket, which I did for Sunday. While the code was appreciated, the pass info (which was never removed from their FilmFreeway page) was fully untrue.
I drove nearly an hour to the con and discovered that the festival itself was on the second floor of the hotel while the con was in the basement ballroom and there wasn't great signage for the festival. I went up to the festival at 11:20, ten minutes before the time my film would screen. My and me other film crew members went into the room and waited for some workers to show up and set up the projector. Two employees arrived and begin to set up at around 11:30 (when the film was slated to begin), it was clear almost immediately that they both weren't knowledgeable of the equipment. They clearly weren't prepped for this job, despite it being day three of the festival. Their tech solving skills amounted to texting and calling the festival director to no real success.
After at least 15 minutes they were able to hook the audio up to the picture. At which point the film begin, the lights were all still on and one of the workers told us that they had to keep the volume low for the panel, at which point they turned the speaker down so low it might as well have been playing from a laptop speaker. They then turned the lights out and left, not restarting the film, losing about the first minute of the film.
The film played as normal, but less than one third into the screening the screen went completely black and the audio cut out. We sat in silence for about thirty seconds before we verbally had to tell the remaining worker that the film was no longer playing... to which they responded by saying they'd text the festival director and then promptly said "Well my work here is done." and going silent. After about ten minutes of them not even calling the director we left the screening room and that was that.
An incredibly disappointing and frustrating outing, for the steep price I didn't ever think it would amount to the single worst and most unprofessional film festival outing of my career. If the festival was free, I could forgive the issues but $30 for the first minute of my film to be talked over and the back two thirds to not even be screened?
Now I only attended Sunday so I can't speak for the quality of the first two screening days... but beyond disappointed. Nobody's art should be treated like this.
