An immersive film festival celebrating QTBIPOC cinema.

The festival counters the decades of erasure and neglect of underrepresented film narratives. We are connected by a shared language of migration, histories of colonialism, ancestral practices, and a rich tapestry of cultural expression.

The festival’s name itself— combining “cine” (Spanish word for “film”) and “filmu” (Yoruba pronunciation for “film”) reflects our commitment to cross-cultural creativity and collaboration.

Cinefilmu 2025 sets an intention to rest with, celebrate, and hold one another—on screen, in community, and in practice.

Filmmakers and attendees explore their connections to community, lineage, and chosen family. Highlighting where they come from, who they are now, and who they aspire to build relationships with in the future.

Creating a space where authenticity is celebrated—both in storytelling and in shared experiences at the festival; Fostering an environment where artists and audiences can form meaningful bonds beyond Cinefilmu; Centering collaboration and resource-sharing to strengthen networks within the QTBIPOC filmmaking community.

Cinefilmu welcomes local, national, and international short and feature films in all genres and forms.

For this year, there is no restriction on when the films were made because Cinefilmu encourages films that were not historically made visible.

1. Films that emphasize the theme will be prioritize in our programs.
2. Submission to Cinefilmu does not guarantee selection and screening.
3. Lead creatives on the film project must identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or people of color.
4. If you have any queries about the submissions process, please email info@mamapapaya.org
