** Our Selection / Awards Procedure: Festival Director / Producers make official selections for the festival by vote. Official Selections are then screened/graded by 5 different judges anonymously and given an overall grade on a 5 point scale for each of the qualifying award categories (with the exception of the “Fest Directors Choice Award”). All judges points are then added together to give it a grade. The top 5 films by grade in each category are then considered an award nominee and listed on this page. The film with the highest grade in each category is considered and announced that category’s award winner at the festival. In the event of a tie for highest grade, the festival director, festival producer and festival founder will each vote on the tied films giving the majority vote the award. In the event that one of the production staff are involved in one of the films involving a tie, a 3rd party will be selected to vote in place of the production staff member involved.

**** The Festival Directors Choice Award nominee’s are the Film Festival Directors top 5 choice films of the festival. The Directors Choice Award is presented at the festival to the Directors favorite film of the festival. (Any film that the festival director is personally involved in at any level is not eligible for this award.)

Award Winners will be announced LIVE at The Chicago Horror Film Festival! www.ChicagoHorrorFilmFest.com

Zero Tolerance Policy for Inappropriate Conduct:
We maintain a strict zero-tolerance policy for rude, disruptive, or unprofessional behavior — both in person and online. This includes conduct at live events, as well as on social media, email communications, or any public or private interactions directed toward or involving the Chicago Horror Film Festival (CHFF) and its staff. Any filmmaker, cast member, crew member, or guest who engages in such behavior may be subject to immediate removal from the event. Furthermore, any film associated with individuals exhibiting inappropriate conduct may be disqualified from the festival and removed from the program at the sole discretion of CHFF. CHFF also reserves the right to void any submissions, nominations, and/or awards associated with individuals or projects found to be in violation of this policy.

Regional Screening Restriction:
Due to the rise of first-time and unestablished (“fly-by-night”) festivals, and in order to protect the integrity, ranking, and long-standing reputation of the Chicago Horror Film Festival within the film festival industry, selected films may not be screened at any other film festival or public event in Illinois within 60 days prior to CHFF. Failure to comply may result in disqualification, removal from the program, and/or forfeiture of nominations and awards at CHFF’s sole discretion.

Rule: No AI-Generated Films
All submitted films must be created by human filmmakers. Entries that use AI to generate scripts, footage, animation, voices, or other primary creative elements will not be accepted. Traditional tools (e.g., editing software, color correction, sound mixing, VFX software) are allowed, but the core storytelling, direction, acting, and artistic creation must be human-made.

Any submission found to rely primarily on AI-generated content will be disqualified.

By attending our events, you acknowledge and agree to adhere to this policy.

Many thanks to this festival for accepting our short film PETE & RE-PETE a couple of years ago, and for screening our short film SOUS VIDE this year. Truly, it was an honor both times!

My debut short was selected for the Spring 2025 festival and had its premiere there, it was an absolute blast. Wish the venue had a little more room for socializing between showtimes but inside the theater had tons of seats available and the crowd was super responsive and kind to all films!

A wonderful festival and I enjoyed my time there! I do think such a large and high profile festival could benefit from more networking events, press opportunities, classes, etc. during the festival—but overall a really great experience and the theatre is absolutely beautiful! You can tell everyone is super passionate about the horror genre and the vibes were supportive and very welcoming.
