WHO ARE WE?
Founded in 2005 and recognized as one of the top documentary film festivals in the world, the Camden International Film Festival (CIFF) gathers boundary pushing storytellers and industry leaders from around the world for a four day celebration of non-fiction cinema.
CIFF is an experience as unique as the films we exhibit. Hosted on the rugged coast of Maine, the Festival Weekend is packed with a hearty roster of filmmaker Q&As, interactive installations and networking sessions - with plenty of opportunity for surprise and discovery. At CIFF, the emphasis is on building relationships - between filmmakers, industry, and audiences.

In CIFF’s program, you’ll find films, performances, and installations that move the documentary artform’s conversations two steps forward. We’re interested in films that explore cinema’s potential, engage in urgent conversations, and are rooted in the perspectives of thoughtful, unique creators.

CIFF is a program of the Points North Institute, the launching pad for the next generation of nonfiction storytellers. Points North is the home to a number of artists programs, including the Points North Fellowship and Pitch, the Points North Forums, and 1-on-1 meetings between industry professionals and exciting new creators. We provide emerging filmmakers with opportunities for professional development and creative inspiration. If you have a documentary feature or short in development, consider applying for one of the Points North Artists Programs: https://pointsnorthinstitute.org/artist-programs/

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
CIFF is a filmmaker-first festival that celebrates the power and possibilities of independent international nonfiction cinema. We are open to documentary films of all styles, subjects and lengths. We’re looking for films that are evocative and expansive, that are grounded by authentic authorship and ethical representation, and that effectively engage audiences while expanding the boundaries of cinematic language with bold, singular visions.

For our two juried competitions – the Harrell Award and Cinematic Vision Award – we are looking for documentary features making their US, North American or World Premiere at CIFF. Features that have already screened in the US are eligible for our non-competitive sections. Our shorts programs have no premiere requirement.

THE FILMMAKER SOLIDARITY FUND
In an increasingly complicated environment, the Points North Institute is committed to examining how power and resources are distributed in the documentary film world. Festivals like CIFF can stand in solidarity with filmmakers to create more equitable, sustainable conditions for independent filmmaking - particularly for filmmakers that have been marginalized or excluded by the industry.

CIFF’s Filmmaker Solidarity Fund is part of our ongoing commitment to creating a more equitable reality for independent filmmakers. Established in 2020, the fund initially provided 50% of net proceeds from our virtual pass and ticket sales directly to feature and short filmmakers selected for CIFF. In its current iteration, the fund provides a flat honorarium to all feature and short films programmed. In total, we have distributed over $75,000 to filmmakers over the past four years.

HARRELL AWARD
The films in the Harrell Competition stand out as some of the most significant documentaries of the year. These works astonished us with their integrity, power, and assertiveness of directorial vision. We celebrate these filmmakers, who showed unbridled creativity and thoughtfulness in the ways they document the world around them.

CINEMATIC VISION AWARD
The Cinematic Vision competition acknowledges bold cinematic practices from filmmakers that are actively, courageously, and creatively reshaping our definition of nonfiction. The films eligible for this award articulate their own ideas of form via sensible directorial visions, sparking conversations beyond the screen and charting a course for the future of cinema.

SHORT FILM AWARD
The Camden shorts program showcases the possibilities resting at the furthest corners of the nonfiction form—films that integrate and innovate between the polarities of form and story, political and personal, the imagined and material. This award recognizes the ways in which shorts filmmakers are pioneers in shaping cinematic futures.

FOWLIE AWARD
The traditional Festival honor, the Audience Award, is now named The Fowlie Award to honor Ben Fowlie’s foundational role in creating CIFF and his lasting impact on its spirit and community. It will be presented annually at the end of the Festival to the audience’s favorite feature-length documentary—a true crowd-pleaser that resonates deeply with festival goers. The winner will be determined by audience vote, and the winning filmmaker(s) will receive a cash award of $10,000, generously donated by Ann and Dick Costello.

Rules of Entry:
The Camden International Film Festival is open to all documentary films of all styles, subjects and lengths. We also encourage submissions that push the boundaries of the form.

What is considered a short film?
Films up to 40 minutes in length are considered short films at our festival. Films over 40 minutes should be submitted as feature length films.

My film’s not quite done yet. What should I do?
CIFF’s programming team will consider rough cuts and fine cuts of documentaries that are slated to be completed by August 2026. If you decide to submit an unfinished cut of your film, please include a note on your post-production stage and timeline in the submissions summary.

What happens if my film premieres at another festival after I submit?
Films that premiere elsewhere after submission remain eligible for consideration. Please notify us promptly of any premiere status changes through your submission platform.

Do you accept films that primarily use archival footage?
Yes! We welcome innovative approaches to archival material that push beyond traditional historical documentaries. Whether your film recontextualizes existing footage or weaves it into contemporary narratives, we're always interested in fresh perspectives on archival storytelling.

Do you accept hybrid documentaries?
Yes! We take a broad view of the documentary form and we embrace films that play with the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction.

Do you accept films in all languages?
Yes, we screen films in all languages and from all regions of the world. All submissions with non-English dialogue should include English subtitles.

All submitting filmmakers and distributors will be notified of the official selections prior to the festival.

Camden International Film Festival is truly one of the gems of the festival circuit. Its unique combination of intimate scale and strong industry presence makes it one of the most rewarding places to screen a film. We were incredibly moved by how invested the festival team was in our project—they knew our film inside and out, which made the entire experience feel personal and unforgettable. Every aspect of the festival was top-notch, from the beautiful projections achieved at each venue to the thoughtful, informed introductions that set the perfect tone for each screening. And let’s not forget the unforgettable parties that brought filmmakers and industry professionals together in a way that felt both casual and connected. Camden’s world-class programming and dedication to independent cinema make it a must for filmmakers seeking both meaningful engagement and a bit of festival magic.

  • CIFF is definitely my favorite film festival out of all of the festivals I've attended around the country. Beautiful venues, incredible parties, and heavy hitters from the documentary industry There are also lots of filmmaker forums for networking, learning more about the craft, and watching filmmaker pitch their latest projects to decision makers.

    Highly recommend!

  • It is no secret that CIFF has become one of the most respected documentary festivals in the world. To have it hosted in Midcoast Maine makes it feel all the more unique. It maintains a level of professionalism while also embedding itself seamlessly into the local community. It was an honor to premiere my short, ELEPHANT, at CIFF in 2023. I saw some truly wild films, met some fine folk, and left feeling inspired. Also, the staff that you encounter on a regular basis totally keep it real.
