The Bokomorebi International Film Festival is a poetic and purposeful celebration of the seventh art - cinema - as a force for connection, compassion, and positive world change.

Brought to you by Studio Bokehgo, our mission is to bring together pioneering filmmakers whose work is rooted in authenticity, ethics, and the belief that storytelling can make the world better. At Bokomorebi, connection and community are at the heart of everything we do.

In our second year, the overarching theme of this year’s Bokomorebi is Peace and Harmony. This year’s festival intends to pull the definition and appreciation of 'peace' away from abstraction - To look at it’s meaning, its reality, and its application. And then alongside this we explore harmony - to look at the connection and rhythms of harmony, and how we can drive it through ethical, authentic and compassionate storytelling.

The festival is really exploring the potential in community based showcase - and will be curating a series of events throughout September, October and November, bespoke to the films, speakers, communities, partners and subjects we are looking to reach and that we find connection with along the way. Much of the activity will be in Yorkshire, with some potential events further afield. The festival is looking at dynamic and bespoke ways to support new and innovative voices in cinema, with the hope of bringing together the incredible work of film and photography artists, to meet with receptive audiences.

We curate unique categories not found at any other festival — celebrating joyful, curious, bold, and visionary cinema that speaks from the soul. Bokomorebi is not just a showcase, but a catalyst: for dialogue, for collaboration, and for reimagining what film festivals can be.

At its heart the festival is about connection through filmmaking. It is a non competitive festival, interested in curating essential film for audiences. Our categories are around Joy, Curiosity, Pioneers, Our World, Peace, Humanity and Dreamers, with then a dedicated emerging filmmakers initiative called Rays of Hope. The festival will be made up of varied events including a showcase of short films, feature films, talks, workshops, events and a and connecting opportunities designed at celebrating and amplifying authentic voices in filmmaking who are searching to empower a better world.

Bokomorebi is a lighthouse for filmmakers and audiences seeking cinema that is not only beautiful, but meaningful - a celebration of art that connects us, challenges us, and invites us into a kinder, more collaborative world.

We are interested in the filmmakers, artists, and storytellers whose work exists beyond the industry norms - films that needed to be made because of the passion, love and reason behind them.

At Bokomorebi, it is not a competition, but a platform. We break from the traditional hierarchical awards model - instead, we celebrate each selected film as a meaningful contribution to our shared cinematic journey.

Every film in the festival is elevated, not ranked. We offer bespoke recognition that honours the unique voice, process, and impact of each work. Examples of past acknowledgements include:

The Visionary Award – for films with a bold and poetic voice
Cinematic Pioneer – for work that explores new territory in form or content
Seeds of Change – for stories that inspire positive action
Beautiful Curiosity Award – for films that open unexpected windows onto the world

Our ‘awards’ are framed through a lens of holistic growth and support - designed to amplify the visibility of your film, your crew, and your mission. Selections may also be profiled across our networks, invited for talks, or showcased in future Bokomorebi projects and educational platforms.

This isn’t just about screening. It’s about celebrating your story in all its depth.

Rules & Terms

Bokomorebi International Film Festival is committed to nurturing meaningful, ethical, and visionary cinema. We aim to create a space that values collaboration over competition and celebrates each filmmaker's unique contribution.

Eligibility

We welcome international submissions from filmmakers of all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels.

We accept short films of upto 25 mins, and feature films upto 120mins, across any genre, as long as they align with Bokomorebi’s ethos: compassion, curiosity, courage, and creative integrity.

Films do not need to be premieres, though we encourage films that haven’t been widely distributed or screened in West Yorkshire before, though this is not a must.

Values & Ethics

We prioritise ethical and authentic storytelling. Films should demonstrate care in their creation - particularly in how communities, identities, and experiences are portrayed.
We are especially passionate about uplifting underrepresented voices and perspectives.

Length & Format

25 mins and under for short films

120 mins and under for feature films

All films must be submitted via FilmFreeway with a working online screener (e.g. Vimeo or FilmFreeway’s native player).

If selected, you must be able to provide a high-quality screening copy (preferably 1080p or higher) and relevant stills or promotional materials.

DCPs are welcome but not required.

Multiple entries

A film can be entered into multiple relevant categories with only a one off fee. Please state any categories you might consider, and our selection team will also think about the categories.

Work-in-progress policy

We can consider work-in-progress submissions if they are close to completion and will be finalised by the screening deadline.

Language & Subtitles

Non-English language films must include English subtitles.

Selection Process

Films will be reviewed by a small, dedicated team who value originality, heart, and purpose.

Our aim is not to judge films as “better” or “worse,” but to curate a tapestry of voices and visions that reflect the diversity of what cinema can be.

Films will be selected throughout the process leading upto September 2026

Some films might be selected earlier when the film is a clear match for the category.

Rights & Ownership

You retain all rights and ownership of your film.
By submitting, you give Bokomorebi permission to screen your film as part of the festival and to use short excerpts/stills for promotional purposes (e.g. on social media or in the programme).
You may withdraw your submission at any time before official selection by contacting us.

Entry Fees & Waivers

There is a small entry fee to help cover our grassroots festival costs. However, we will never let finances be a barrier - if this is an issue, please contact us for a fee waiver. We are here to support your voice.

Recognition/ Awards

We offer bespoke recognition, not competitive awards — such as Visionary Award, Seeds of Change, and others.

An alternative approach to film platforming

We are here to amplify films and filmmakers that we think are making the world a better place. As part of our mission, the film festival is a core element, but we will also look to support and celebrate films and filmmakers through marketing, interviews, networking opportunities, community and visibility. In some cases this might apply to filmmakers not selected for the festival programme.

Transparency

We are a small team and the festival currently receives no external funding. To that end, we endeavour to respond quickly and bring in the wider initiative around the festival, though these things do take time, and you will be part of a community support this ambitious, if still young, festival.

Community and Network

Filmmakers, whether selected or not, may be welcomed to participate in the Bokomorebi Festival Community Network if the opportunity seems of benefit. This network is still being established with the view to be formed by Summer 2026

Conduct and Community

Bokomorebi is a values-driven festival. We reserve the right to remove a film from the lineup if its content or team contradicts our principles of kindness, inclusivity and artistic integrity. This would always be handled with open dialogue and care.

AI & Authenticity Policy

Bokomorebi celebrates truth, human perspective, and authentic creative expression.
To protect this ethos, we cannot accept films in which AI has been given primary creative control over the cinematography, story, or imagery - for example:

- AI-generated scripts or story structures where the AI is the principal writer
- AI-created imagery that forms the core visual identity of the film (e.g. fully AI-generated scenes or characters)

We ask all filmmakers to respect this policy with honesty and integrity. Our aim is not to reject the use of every AI tool, as we appreciate they are often integrated into editing software etc, but to preserve the human voice and lived experience at the heart of the work.

We recognise that:

AI is integrated into many creative software tools and workflows
Assistive AI tools can support accessibility (e.g. for neurodivergent creators or language translation)
These uses are appreciated, provided the core authorship and creative vision remain human-led.

We believe this policy is a way we can navigate the evolving relationship between truth, media, and technology - with care, transparency, and respect for authentic storytelling.

Thank you

Thank you for sharing your work with us. We honour the courage it takes to tell stories - and we can’t wait to experience yours.

If you have any question please contact us and we will be happy to help.
