Black Canvas – Contemporary Film Festival announces the opening of registrations for Mexican and international films that, in their different lengths, formats, genres and categories, aspire to be part of the 
Official Selection in competition; which is divided into four sections: New Horizon International Competition, Beyond the Canvas Competition, Mexico inside the Canvas Competition and New Horizon Shorts Competition in which the Transmutation of the Canvas award will:

- Best Film (Economical prize winner)
 awarded by the Universidad de la Comunicación.
- Best Director
- Special Mention

As well, the films will compete for awards in the four mentioned categories awarded by the Young Canvas jury (a jury made up of young students of film and related careers).

This seven edition will take place from September 29 to October 8, 2023 in a hybrid format; both face-to-face at distinguished venues in Mexico City, and virtual through FilminLatino platform accessible to the entire national territory and DAFilms on international territory.

The call for entries will be open from January 18 and until May 31, 2023.

AWARDS AND PRIZES

· Prizes will be awarded by a jury of nine filmmakers or film industry professionals from all over the world.
· The jury will be split into three groups for each competition.
· Additionally, the festival will issue an invitation to students currently pursuing a degree in film and similar topics, and enrolled in any of the universities and colleges of Mexico
City, to assemble a jury made up of young people: the Young Canvas Jury.

NEW HORIZON: INTERNATIONAL FILM COMPETITION

For:
-Best Film: the jury will award the statuette “Transmutation of the Canvas” and a monetary prize of $100,000.00 MXN pesos (One hundred thousand Mexican pesos) granted to the director by La Universidad de la Comunicación.
-Best Director: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.
-Special Mention

BEYOND THE CANVAS: INTERNATIONAL FILM COMPETITION

For:
· Best film: the jury will award the statuette “Transmutation of the Canvas” and a monetary prize of $50,000.00 MXN pesos (Fifty thousand Mexican pesos) granted to the director by La Universidad de la Comunicación.
· Best Director: the jury will award an acknowledgement and the statuette.
· Special Mention

MEXICO INSIDE DE CANVAS COMPETITION

For:
-Best film: the jury will award the statuette “Transmutation of the Canvas” and a monetary prize of $50,000.00 MXN pesos (Fifty thousand Mexican pesos) granted to the director by La Universidad de la Comunicación.
-Best Director: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.
-Special Mention

NEW HORIZON SHORTS COMPETITION

For:
-Best film: the jury will award the statuette “Transmutation of the Canvas” and a monetary prize of $30,000.00 MXN pesos (Thirty thousand Mexican pesos) granted to the director by La Universidad de la Comunicación.
-Best Director: the jury will award an acknowledgment and the statuette.
-Special Mention

NEW HORIZON INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION


A place for the great filmmakers of the future who, with their first, second and even third films, invite us to discover, in a n honest and particular way, new roads and cinematographic perspectives.
- Winner of a financial prize of 100.000 $MXN awarded by the Universidad de la Comunicación.
- First works, second and third films with a minimum duration of 40 minutes will be received, without distinction of genre or format.
- Films must have a production date after January 1, 2021.
- Feature films must be registered on the Festival's official website www.blackcanvasfcc.com or via FilmFreeway https://filmfreeway.com/BlackCanvasFCC , including a private Vimeo link for viewing (works in progress will be accepted).
- Only films that premiere in Mexico and have not been screened at other festivals in the country will be selected.
- It is allowed to register more than one film presented by the same director or production company.
- The Selection Committee reserves the right to include films by direct invitation in the program

BEYOND THE CANVAS COMPETITION


A meeting point to question the History of Cinema, where renowned and upcoming filmmakers alike come together and who take the film language to the limit proposing new possibilities by means of their radical and unclassifiable proposals.
- Winner of an economic prize of $50,000MXN awarded by the Universidad de la Comunicación.
- All kinds of film productions, short films, medium-length films and feature films will be received, without distinction of genre or format, encouraging free visual experimentation and formal explorations.
- Films must have a production date after January 1, 2021.
- The works must be registered on the Festival's official website www.blackcanvasfcc.com or via FilmFreeway https://filmfreeway.com/BlackCanvasFCC, including a private Vimeo link for viewing (works in progress will be accepted).
- Only films that premiere in Mexico and have not been screened at other festivals in the country will be selected.
- It is allowed to register more than one film presented by the same director or production company.
- The Selection Committee reserves the right to include films by direct invitation in the program

MEXICO INSIDE THE CANVAS COMPETITION

In a competition without distinction of formats or genres, Mexican productions and filmmakers from the north to the south of the country, explore new paths in narrative and cinematographic language.
- Winner of an economic prize of $50,000MXN awarded by the Universidad de la Comunicación.
- All types of Mexican productions will be received: short films, medium-length films and feature films, without distinction of genre or format.
- Films must have a production date after January 1, 2021.
- The works must be registered on the Festival's official website www.blackcanvasfcc.com or via FilmFreeway https://filmfreeway.com/BlackCanvasFCC, including a private Vimeo link for viewing (works in progress will be accepted).
- Films that premiere in Mexico City and have not been screened virtually at other festivals in the country will be selected. (Priority will be given to films that have not been screened at another festival in the country).
- It is allowed to register more than one film presented by the same director or production company.
- The Selection Committee reserves the right to include in the programming films by direct invitation or from previous years that have not been screened in the country.

NEW HORIZON SHORTS COMPETITION

A gathering of diverse gazes and viewpoints from all over the world, in which, altogether, the different boundaries of cinema are blurred.
- Winner of an economic prize of $30,000MXN awarded by the Universidad de la Comunicación.
- The films must have a maximum duration of 40 minutes and whose production date is after January 1, 2021.
- Short films must be registered on the Festival's official website www.blackcanvasfcc.com or via FilmFreeway https://filmfreeway.com/BlackCanvasFCC, including a private Vimeo link for viewing (works in progress will be accepted).
- Registration will cost 20 euros via PayPal.
- Only films that premiere in Mexico and have not been screened at other festivals in the country will be selected.
- All selected films must have subtitles in English, if the original language is Spanish. In the case of international films, subtitles in Spanish will be requested.
- It is allowed to register more than one film presented by the same director or production company.
- The Selection Committee reserves the right to include films by direct invitation in the program.

OFFICIAL NOTICE OF SELECTION
-The Official Selection will be made public by September 2022.
-The festival will contact those filmmakers whose work has been selected in order to provide them with all the information regarding shipping details for screening materials (DCP, blu-ray, .mov, AppleProRes 422HQ) and other information on the festival.
-Mexican Short Films are to be delivered in a DCP format along with a backup blu-ray.
