We are thrilled to announce that the first edition of the Birmingham Kurdish Film Festival (BKFF) will take place in May 2026.

The Birmingham Kurdish Film Festival is a driving force behind film culture in the UK and a bold celebration of culture, cinema, and identity. We aim to help more Kurdish communities and British in the region watch, make, and show films.
Film has the power to bring people together, change hearts and minds, as well as entertain and delight – this most democratic of art forms should have no barrier to entry and we are passionate about being inclusive and open to all.
We are pleased to announce that our FilmFreeway account is now active and open for film submissions. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2025. We look forward to seeing your wonderful films.

The categories for film submissions include Feature Fiction and Short Films. Submissions must be of films completed within the years 2023-2024 and 2025, although any feature-length titles from 2023 will also be considered. The regular submission deadline is midnight on November 30, 2025.

This year BKFF will announce the following awards:

Feature films in the fiction is for screening only.
The festival’s statuette along with the cash prize in this edition of the BKFF festival is exclusively dedicated to short films.

(BKFF) Birmingham Kurdish Film Festival

TERMS & CONDITIONS

1. Submitting are open to all Kurdish filmmakers or filmmakers whose films are about Kurds. (It does not include documentary films)
2. The submissions for 2026 is open to short and feature-length Fiction films completed within 2023-2024 and 2025. Any feature-length titles from 2023 will also be considered.

3. Any short film submission must be no longer than 25 minutes, including the title or end credits.

4. The film must have English subtitles available.

5. All films submitted into the competition will be watched, deliberated and selected by a selection committee formed by BKFF Management Committee before shortlisted into the competition.

6. BKFF reserves the exclusive right to use part of the film as marketing and promotional material that supports the competitions and content of BKFF.

7. BKFF reserves the right to refuse any entry for any reason at its absolute discretion.

8. The decisions of the selection committee judges and BKFF are final. No correspondence or discussion will be entered into concerning any decision.

9. The entrant must submit only his/her own original work and agrees and confirms that this will not infringe on copyright or any other rights of any third party.

10. All mailing costs for submissions belong to the entrant. The Birmingham Kurdish Film Festival does not pay for any expenses towards sending submissions to the competition.

11. Submitted copies cannot be returned to the Entrant. Copies of all submissions will be kept in the Birmingham Kurdish Film Festival Film Archive.

12. No responsibility is taken by BKFF for loss, damage or delay to films entered.

13. BKFF reserves the right to seek and issue publicity on behalf of the entrant. By entering the Competition, the entrant agrees to participate in publicity as appropriate in the context of the Competition.

14. The film is made at the entrant's own expense and BKFF shall not be liable to reimburse any expenses incurred in making an entry.

15. The entrant must ensure that all contributions to his/her film or recordings or other submissions and any copyrighted material included in the short film (including music) have been cleared for all purposes of the Competition and these Terms and Conditions.

16. BKFF accept no responsibility for any misuse of intellectual property rights.

17. BKFF will hold the right to exhibit a film at no financial gain and for educational purposes at educational institutions in the UK.

18. Acceptance of these Terms and Conditions is a condition of entry and receipt of an entry by BKFF (submission) amounts to acceptance of the Terms and Conditions.

DECISION-MAKING PROCEDURE

The Selection Committee, composed of individuals chosen by the BKFF Festival Management Committee, will review the preview copies at the earliest possible opportunity. Directors, producers, and distributors will be informed of the committee's decisions 6-8 weeks before the festival begins.

Upon completing the selection process, BKFF may also choose some films not selected for competition to be screened in the film program(s) out of competition. All entrants will be notified of these decisions in due course.
