BRIEF HISTORY:
Born in 1983 as a Anteprima for independent Italian cinema, Bellaria Film Festival focuses its attention on documentary film with the aim of promoting independent Italian productions.
The recent affirmation of the documentary genre and the increase of exhibitions dedicated to it, shows that the direction taken by Bellaria Film Festival represents a clear trend of the contemporary. The documentary cinema - maximum expressive medium, witness of our times - stages new styles, identifies new languages and expressive forms, relating current scenarios. While maintaining its vocation intact, the event has been rethought in recent years and, starting from 2018, enjoys a new artistic direction.

Today, Bellaria Film Festival is mainly divided into two competitions.
The first, Bei Doc, historically dedicated to the award of documentaries of Italian origin, since the 2018 edition has seen the inclusion and award of documentaries of foreign origin.
The second, Bei Young Doc, is dedicated to the works produced by directors under 30.

The inviolable principles of the art. IX of our Italian Constitution and their declination in the visual were the key values of the last edition and reconfirm common themes of the Bellaria Film Festival. Maintaining the same sensitivity, the artistic direction intends to pursue the line already adopted in the previous edition, confirming the art. 9 of the Italian Constitution as the main theme and the objectives of valorization and protection of the heritage (historical, artistic, cultural and environmental), promotion of expressive freedom and knowledge of the cultures of others, through the use of more arts and languages: from music, theatre, cinema.
The main competition-Bei Doc- will be directed to documentaries of any format, with a maximum duration of 60 minutes. The works presented may be unpublished, presented in other festivals or distributed in cinemas. The competition will be open to Italian and foreign citizens and may be the result of international co-productions, world previews, European or national. Documentaries of foreign origin should contain appropriate subtitles.
Bei Doc is also joined this year by a special section, Bei Young Doc, to promote the activities of documentary filmmakers under 30.

In order to encourage knowledge and raise awareness on equal opportunities and / or diversity issues, a special mention called "equal opportunities" will be addressed to the short movie that place emphasis on social issues (such as gender policies and disabilities) at best.

Also this year, a special attention will be devoted to the relationship between music and cinema: there will be a special award "Luis Bacalov" for the best soundtrack, voted directly by the audience.
