Multimedia and popculture festival of films, animations, music videos and video games. Under the Black Horse flag: a symbol of an unexpected winner, a reference to the protofilm experiment of madman Eadweard Muybridge, a ironic commentary on the golden fauna of film awards, or a reference to the mining heritage of Upper Silesia. Movie screenings, digital games exhibitions, concerts and live acts, meetups and discussions. Ars Independent is an open-formula festival.
In previous years, the festival hosted a variety of artists from all over the world, including Béla Tarr, Nina Menkes, Phil Mulloy, Laila Pakalnina, Bruce LaBruce, Tami Tamaki, Stephen „M.O.O.N.” Gilarde, Jakuba Dvorský, Mariola Brillowska, Piotr Dumała, Arkadiusz Jakubik, Bodo Kox, Łukasz Barczyk, Sos Sosowski, Wiktor Stribog, Władysław Komendarek, Markku Hakala & Mari Käki, Héléna Klotz, Łukasz Suchocki, Bartosz Stankiewicz, Noaz Deshe, Elmar Imanov, Jethro Massey, and many others.
The event is organized by the culture institution Katowice the City of Gardens and Silesia Film Institute.
THE BLACK HORSE OF ANIMATION COMPETITION
Directors of school animations and animated debuts and second films produced post-graduation after January 1st, 2025 will vie for the title and statuette of the Black Horse of Animation and a monetary award of 500 euros.
THE BLACK HORSE OF MUSIC VIDEOS COMPETITION
Directors of music videos produced after January 1st, 2025 will vie for the title and statuette of the Black Horse of Music Video and a monetary award of 500 euros.
