Ana Silvia Cantú is an independent filmmaker born and raised in Oaxaca, Mexico. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Digital Media from the Mexican University Tecnológico de Monterrey. During her years as a university student, Ana Silvia was involved in many student short films, including the short documentary Xólotl: La Magia en México, where she served as a producer and production designer. Xólotl was an Official Selection in the International Documentary Film Festival, DocsMX.
After obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree, Ana Silvia began the Film Production program at Vancouver Film School. Unfortunately, when the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the world, she had to go back to Mexico and take a leave of absence from the program.
While in her hometown, Ana Silvia decided to produce, write and direct her first non-student film, the short documentary El Chef Zapoteco (The Zapotec Chef). The Zapotec Chef went on to be part of the Official Selection in 3 international film festivals, including Shorts Mexico, the biggest Documentary Film Festival in Latin America, where it premiered. The film also won the Best Short Documentary category in Roma Short Film Festival and Tokyo International Short Film Festival. Furthermore, it was a semi-finalist in the Best Short Documentary category in the Dumbo Film Festival in New York City and it’s currently a finalist in the same category in the Dallas Independent Film Festival in Dallas, Texas. Ana Silvia also produced and directed the photography in the horror short film Ante La Duda (When In Doubt). This film was an official selection in Vertical Movie Festival and Vertifilms: Vertical Film Festival.
She is currently back in Vancouver Film School continuing with her Film Production Program and is set to graduate in December, 2023.
