The American Documentary and Animation Film Festival and Film Fund (AmDocs) is one of the largest Docs and Animation festivals in the United States, located near the media capital of Hollywood in beautiful Palm Springs. This unique event focuses on international films in both the short and feature categories as well as showcasing animation. Recipients of the festival’s qualifying awards will be eligible for consideration in the Documentary Short Film category of the Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with the Academy rules. In conjunction with the festival is the American Documentary Film Fund where U.S. filmmakers compete for start-up or finishing funds in order to complete their film masterpieces. Typically, the festival program proudly consists of 90% from film submissions. AmDocs, seeing the bigger picture.

For the Film Fund, competing filmmakers can win up to $50,000 in cash and post-production prizes.

Beginning 2023, Film Fund Competitors will have the opportunity to partner with European co-producers as the Pitch Competition will take place in Jihlava, Czech Republic during the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, late October 2023.

The festival is open to all categories within the documentary and animation film genres. The film should not be more than 3 years old, though in certain circumstances, a retrospective may be screened and/or a "hidden gem" never seen before by public.

Amdocs is not only a festival in which one can watch lots of great films, but it's also a space to build supportive communities. I truly appreciate everyone who made it possible for our film, "Kirk, the Blacksmith," to be a part of this terrific event.

    Response from festival:

Lu Li, we very much apologize and understand how cleaning it can be for a filmmmmaker to attend. We will look to see if we have specific photos for you from your work's screening. Please understand that while in the throes of organizing the festival that while we each to accommodate any requests it is difficult at times because there are consistently over 200 films with over 300 guests attending. More importantly than having a phot or two of inside a dark theatre, in my humble opinion, is knowing that your film was a part of an outstanding program that may other artists had wished their film could be included. We can tell you that the reaction during the Music Video competition was so exciting that we will continue to host this genre at AmDocs- and your film was a big part of the positive reaction from the audience. We hope you reconsider and try to attend in the future whether you have a film included or not we will honor your original invitation and treat you as if you are a part of our AmDocs family.

During the six days of the festival, I met so many talented filmmakers, artists, audience members and volunteers. My homestay hosts were so nice and accommodating. The evening parties were at a different jaw-dropping venue each night and the desert sun and air were a welcome change from my hometown of Seattle. More than just a doc fest, the festival director, Teddy Grouya and his team, bring in animated films and music videos of stunning quality as well as enriching panels with some distinguished filmmakers -- Antonia Campbell-Hughes,Tea Lindeburg, Gus Van Sant, and Christopher Blauvelt. The opening night featured Sean Penn presenting and discussing his documentary about Ukraine and his Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE). I was thrilled that my daughter Nina Schwanse, CALL ME MULE's editor, was able to drive down from LA to attend the screening/Q&A. And to top it all off, we won the Best Feature Doc award! A special time!

John, it was so lovely meeting you and your daughter. You are a fine filmmaker as evidenced by your history in the art and by the acknowledgement of the judges who chose your work worthy of an award. Thank you for being with us!
