ALPAVIRAMA (“comma” in Sanskrit) is an International Youth Film Festival of short films and Documentaries organized by the Film and Video Communication discipline of the National Institute of Design (NID) Ahmedabad. The biennial festival invites films of young filmmakers across the globe, including students' films. The festival commenced in 2011 as a South Asian Documentary and Short Film Festival, and in 2022, it transitioned into an International Youth Film Festival. Since 2022, the festival has also initiated Cine Bazaar, a marketplace for young filmmakers & Audiophile, a competition of storytelling through sound. The festival's main competition is named F 30/30 (Film under 30 minutes and filmmaker under 30 years). The festival also organizes screening of special packages of films, masterclasses, workshops, seminars, and exhibitions.

The 7th edition of the Alpavirama is scheduled from 15th to 19th October 2024. This year, the festival's theme is “Reflected Realities”; a portrait of reality through the lens of young filmmakers across the globe. We invite you to join us… take a pause and reflect on the world we share!

The F 30/30 Competition welcomes films under 30 minutes in duration by filmmakers under 30 years of age from across the world, including student filmmakers.

Audiophile is a narrative and experimental sound competition for sound artists, musicians, audio enthusiasts, and anyone interested in audio as a medium. The submissions are invited of audio works that push the limits of expression beyond music and radio programs.

The Cine Bazaar is a space for young filmmakers to connect with producers, production houses and streaming platforms. We aim to facilitate filmmakers in pitching their projects [at any stage of development] to producers for funding. The most promising projects will receive the Cine Bazaar Production Grant 2024.

We hope to nurture and develop a practice around films and filmmaking that encourages young people to experiment with audio-visual as a form in fiction and non-fiction. We look forward to receiving your works and taking a pause for reflection on our world!
