GENERAL FESTIVAL INFORMATION
ABOUT THE AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL ATLANTA (AFFATL)
The African Film Festival Atlanta (AFFATL) is the flagship annual event of the African Film and Arts Foundation Inc. (AFAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit media arts organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. Launched in November 2020, AFFATL serves as a vibrant platform for emerging and established filmmakers to showcase films that reflect the multifaceted lives, cultures, and experiences of people of African descent.
AFFATL’s mission is to spotlight and celebrate the rich diversity of African and African Diaspora stories through the art of filmmaking and other creative expressions. The festival features a curated lineup of screenings, panel discussions, workshops, and networking events that foster cultural exchange and industry collaboration.
Now entering its 5th year, the 2026 edition of AFFATL will take place from March 26–30, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia. With 1,500+ attendees projected, this milestone edition promises to be the most dynamic yet, bringing together filmmakers, artists, and audiences from across the globe in celebration of African cinema.
Atlanta, often referred to as “Black Hollywood”, is home to one of the largest African and Caribbean populations in the U.S. and is a major hub for film production. It is reputed to be the third-largest settlement for Africans in the United States and is also home to a significant Caribbean population. With direct flights to many African countries and a thriving creative economy, Atlanta is the ideal host city for this international celebration of African storytelling. Atlanta is also home to the world's busiest airport, making it highly accessible for global participants.
With the spread of African pop culture such as Afrobeats, the rise of industries like Nollywood (Nigeria Cinema), considered the second-largest film industry in terms of distribution globally, and the running joke of the Jollof Rice Wars, we no longer have that “single story” of Africa. Technology and social media have helped springboard multiple homogeneous stories about Africa, allowing for greater visibility of its rich diversity. AFFATL joins this cultural moment by offering a cinematic counter-narrative and platform that reflects the complexity, creativity, and vibrancy of African and Diaspora life.
The goal of AFFATL is not only to celebrate African cinema but to be part of the conversation and contribute action-driven input toward reshaping and improving global perceptions of the continent through storytelling, creative exchange, and media representation.
