Join us for an inspiring film event celebrating the stories of people who get outdoors despite their physical disabilities to find purpose, healing, and hope.

For many living with disabilities, a life of adventure in the outdoors can feel far from reach. The Adaptive Adventure Film Festival, run by Mastering Mountains Charitable Trust, exists to show people that hope, healing, and community can be found through outdoor adventures, whether big or small. The films we select challenge perceptions of what’s possible, advocate for inclusivity in the outdoors, and are all a testament to the fact that an adventurous life remains within reach, no matter a person’s abilities.

To our knowledge, this is the first film festival to focus on disability and adventure (adaptive adventure), anywhere in the world! Last year's event sold out, and we are excited for our second year running the festival.

Associated with the event, we run inclusive community events for people to connect outdoors.

An admission charge will be made to the public to cover the festival’s costs and as a fundraiser for Mastering Mountains Charitable Trust (www.masteringmountains.org.nz). These funds will be used by Mastering Mountains in their programmes, helping people with disabilities to find hope and community through self-directed outdoor adventure.

— INFORMATION FOR FILMMAKERS —
The festival is aimed at the general public, as well as people directly or indirectly affected by disability. The theme for this year is: hope and community in adaptive outdoor adventure.

We are interested in films that highlight adaptive approaches enabling people with disabilities to getting outdoors and experience community. All films should advocate for the benefits of getting outdoors, whether it’s a local park, the countryside, a river or a mountain landscape, and if possible, illustrate the power of community in an outdoor context.

Films must feature people with physical disabilities in the outdoors. We have a special interest in neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, functional neurological disorder, Parkinson's, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and stroke. We are also interested in films portraying conditions such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury (e.g. paraplegia,
quadriplegia, etc.), pain conditions (e.g. fibromyalgia, CRPS, etc.), chronic fatigue, motor disabilities, sensory disabilities, and musculoskeletal disabilities (e.g. limb loss, muscular dystrophy, etc.).

Please note:
- We prefer shorter films (10-20 minutes), but will accept longer films.
- Please email us if you are a New Zealand filmmaker or if you are entering a NZ or world premiere.

All entries will be downloaded and reviewed by a pre-selected committee, chaired by the Festival Director, prior to the festival. Entrants will be notified if they make the official selection, and their films will be screened to the public during the festival.
