Xenia Matthews is an innovative film and visual artist interested in gallery film work and spatially oriented immersive film media. Matthews has ambitions of owning a gallery where the traditional black box theatre space can be rethought, making room for sculptors, painters, and performance artists to affect the live film experience.
With a background in illustration and fine arts, she's morphed the camera-stylo mode into camera-pinceau (paintbrush) to create colorful film art that toes the lines of experimental, documentary, and narrative.
Matthews creates films as a way to understand her own personal experiences and that of those around her. Black queer womanhood, and all that it encompasses - the joys, the struggles, the laughter, the pain, the misunderstood - is a common topic of her work.
Using film and other art forms to educate, entertain, comfort, aid, and generate discussion in communities of color is her ultimate goal.
