Xenia Matthews is an innovative film and visual artist who creates highly saturated hybrid films that stimulate the senses. Her work focuses on her personal experiences of black womanhood - the joys, the struggles, the misunderstood - externalizing what is often only experienced internally.
Her impactful work has been recognized by Filmmaker Magazine, as she’s been featured as one of the 25 New Faces of Independent Film for 2022. Her award winning film A Few Things I'm Beginning to Understand completed its festival run, screening at Indie Memphis, Slamdance, NFFTY, and many others. Xenia's new short, sci-fi and surreal OURIKA!, premiered at the 2022 Blackstar Film Festival as part of their inaugural Philadelphia Filmmaker Lab and screened at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival shortly thereafter. In the future, Xenia seeks to install her films, using physical space to enhance the immersive experience. She is currently writing her first feature film.
