Vanessa Wells has worked in the arts industry for almost 20 years. She has a long history as a performer with the Court Theatre, and has run her own successful voice business from her home studio for over 8 years.
Over the last three years Vanessa has made a shift from in front of the camera to behind, with highlights being directing her debut documentary film “East to East”, and it’s official selection for the New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) 2018, where it screened to sell-out houses. It has also recently screened as Official Selection at FIFO Tahiti.
When Vanessa first started working with cameras in 2007 as a presenter and host, progressing to field producing and directing, with regional television station CTV, the experience triggered a passion for human interest stories, and stories from the community.
On a personal level, Vanessa has lived abroad for many years, is a keen runner, biker, hiker and adventure racer. She is also an operational member of LandSAR (Search and Rescue), and has written magazine feature articles published in “Say Yes To Adventure” (Vol.2, 2015) and “NZ Adventure Magazine” (Jun/Jul 2016).
In the summer of 2018/19 Vanessa travelled to Antarctica twice, supported by Antarctica NZ’s Community Engagement Programme. She is currently creating a touring educational children’s play, and supporting AV material to accompany this. The play will tour NZ and Australian primary schools in 2020 to an audience of over 120,000 kids. While in Antarctica Vanessa also created content for Sesame Street - a short film on counting to 4!
Vanessa is on the board of WIFT NZ (Women in Film and Television), and currently has both documentary and fiction projects in development.
