Isabelle's journey with filmmaking began with an idea in 2020 to make a film. The original idea looks very different from the present! Her mom found a film festival through 4-H and Isabelle made a one-minute promo video about American Heritage Girls for it. Her mom also found the Christian Youth Film Society's web page. The festival had already passed, but they were having a GOOD Video contest. The deadline was in a couple weeks. Once she had the idea: a girl who isn't sure what to do after high school but decides to trust God, she filmed it in a week, using her sisters as actors. It was a finalist in the GOOD Video contest.
She'd been talking to the director of Christian Youth Film Society and he invited her to join the Zoom meetings for youth, helping plan the next festival. He also invited her to apply to attend the Mentor Movie Project. The Mentor Movie Project is a workshop put on by Christian Youth Film Society which brings those in the industry to work along side the youth and teach them about making a film. She applied, and was accepted!
Isabelle and her mom flew out to California in June of 2022 for eight days to attend and help make THE DRIVING LESSON. She learned alot from it and met several people who would later help greatly with filmmaking. While in Bakersfield, she decided to make a film and go to the film festival next year.
Once home in Kansas, Isabelle wrote the script to Phoenix Rising, a short film about a girl who finds God through running. She received alot of help from Nathan Thomas, a filmmaker she'd met while filming THE DRIVING LESSON and believes Phoenix Rising would not have been possible without him. During most of August 2022, she filmed Phoenix Rising with help from her sisters and her friends. It was long days but worth it! She edited, added music from the composer, Aaron Smith, and the sound design from Nathan Thomas, and submitted it to the festival the morning of January 9th, 2023, the day of the deadline.
It was accepted to the festival. Isabelle and her mom prepared to fly out to California again. She attended the high school and college festivals and loved both. It's a good thing she went as Phoenix Rising won Best Picture for High School! She packaged the trophy very carefully and took it and the giant check home.
Her other project over the summer of 2022 was creating a Christian media company called MorningStar Media. It not only includes films but it also runs a magazine for teens called Lydian. She is hoping to expand it to include books and music in the future.
Her next film is planned to be shot during the summer of 2023. It has something to do with family, a treasure hunt, and dirtbikes. How much of each will be in, she's not sure yet but will figure it out eventually!
