Sharon Barr is an American actress who graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and quickly achieved cult status through her participation in the Neo-expressionist Off and Off-Off-Broadway movement. She performed in many new works by emerging playwrights at historical theaters like La Ma Ma etc., Playwrights Horizon, Manhattan Theater Club, Theater Genesis, etc. She largely worked with playwright Tom Eyen, (DREAMGIRLS) and originated the role of Cherie Netherland in his play 'Women Behind Bars' at the Astor Place Theater for which she won a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award.
She was later cast in the same play (Women Behind Bars) but in a different role. It ran for a year at the famous Roxy on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles.
It was from this production that she was noticed by Hollywood and was able to establish herself as a Television and Film actress appearing in numerous TV spots, including Seinfeld, Hill Street Blues, Night Court, and Cheers where she was the only actor to play two different characters on two separate episodes. A series regular on the final season of the groundbreaking 'Max Headroom', she also worked with Barbra Streisand in Martin Ritt's film 'Nuts', Dario Argento's 'Trauma', and Blake Edward's 'A Fine Mess' among others.
In the early '90s, Barr wrote and performed a solo performance piece entitled "Protect Me From What I Want". Her show enjoyed a nice run in various comedy venues around Los Angeles including the Comedy Store and The Largo.
Barr recently completed a novel entitled LIKE A COMPLETE UNKNOWN that takes place in Manhattan in the summer of 1969.
In addition to writing her next book, Sharon has just begun directing short experimental films. Her latest in which she stars, 'AXIS Mundi ' has thus far been selected for five Festivals including Chelsea Film Festival, Amsterdam's Liftoff Festival, and the Liftoff fest. in Paris.
Barr is also a Licensed Practitioner of Chinese Medicine in New York and California.
