QUEER EXPRESSION: Writing Contest for Stage & Screen celebrates bold, original queer voices creating work for the theater and the screen.

We seek scripts that place LGBTQIA+ characters, experiences, and perspectives at the center — stories that are joyful, defiant, intimate, political, funny, lyrical, messy, or beautifully unresolved. Whether grounded in realism or driven by imagination, we welcome work that speaks with authenticity and urgency.

The contest is presented by Open Space Arts, a Chicago-based storefront theater and film hub, as part of the ongoing Queer Expression initiative supporting queer storytelling through theater, film, and community programming.

Writers of all backgrounds, identities, and career stages are encouraged to submit. You do not need prior production, representation, or awards to enter.

Categories include:
Stage plays (one-act and full-length)
Screenplays (short and feature-length)

All genres are welcome.

🏆 AWARDS & PRIZES

Selected scripts will be designated QUEER EXPRESSION – Best of the Fest.

Depending on the work and available programming opportunities, selected writers may receive:

Public recognition on Queer Expression and Open Space Arts platforms

Consideration for staged readings, workshops, or developmental opportunities

Inclusion in future Queer Expression programming or artist spotlights

This is a writing-centered contest. Any readings, workshops, or presentations are offered at the discretion of the producing organization and are not guaranteed.
