Nikos Nikolopoulos is a film director and cinematographer based in Athens, Greece. He is vice-president at Film Directors-Producers Guild of Greece (ESPEK) and member of the Hellenic Film Academy. He studied film direction at the “Hellenic Cinema and Television School Stavrakos” and photography at “Leica Academy”, Athens. Since 2000, he has worked as set photographer in Greek and international feature films, counting more than 30 collaborations. Among others, he has worked with David Cronenberg (Crimes of the Future, in-post), Jeremy Podeswa (Fugitive Pieces), Theo Angelopoulos (Τhe Other Sea - unfinished), Pantelis Voulgaris (Brides, Little England), Lefteris Voyatzis (Cleansed), and Dimitris Papaioannou (Primal Matter, The Great Tamer, Since-She, as cinematographer). From 2011 to 2019 he has traveled and lived abroad (Istanbul, Mexico, Peru) as part of personal artistic projects. His work has been published in various magazines and newspapers such as The New York Times, La Repubblica, Positif, Rolling Stone, American Cinematographer, Cahiers du Cinéma. In 2010, he co-wrote [with Evris Papanikolas] the script for the short film Just A Perfect Day, which was nominated for the Golden Pardino - Leopards of Tomorrow Award at the International Competition section of the Locarno International Film Festival 2011. In 2014, he completed his first feature film POLK, which premiered at the 55th Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November 2014, where it received a FIPRESCI Special Mention Award “for the high standard and inventive combination of history and literature, its formalistic boldness and its many mysterious, realistic and beautiful images”. POLK had its world premiere at the 44th Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma in Montréal and was also selected for the T-Mobile New Horizons IFF, Lost Lost Lost section, Wrocław. For POLK, Nikolopoulos was nominated for the Best New Director Award at the 2015 Hellenic Film Academy awards. In 2017, he exhibited the video-audio-sculptural installation Klíros [co-created with Artemis Zervou], as part of Rick Lowe's Victoria Square Project in the context of documenta14. In early 2021, he directed the short video Kelifos (choreographer Fotis Nikolaou) for the Greek National Opera. MUSA, his second feature film (co-written with Artemis Zervou) received the MouSou Award from the International Jury Works in Progress at the 62nd Thessaloniki International Film Festival and was completed in 2021.
