’s Online New England Film Festival is an online film festival that runs between the day after Labor Day in September through mid-October each year on the website Founded in 2009, the festival features New England short (under 30-minute) films in all genres—drama, comedy, thriller, documentary, horror, animation, music video, family, experimental, and sci-fi. We welcome films by all filmmakers, especially those from under-represented groups including people of color, women, and LGBTQ+ filmmakers!

All screenings are online only.

***2020 Festival Notes***

- We have *reduced* our fee for Regular Entry to match Early Entry in 2020 in order to reduce the burden of fees on filmmakers during COVID-19.

- We will host a private invite-only networking event for 2020 and 2019 festival filmmakers, festival staff, and industry/festival partners! (Note: Due to COVID-19, this might be a virtual event!)

Jury award prizes are chosen by festival staff, and audience award prizes are determined by number of views in categories such as animation, documentary, drama, comedy, etc.

All films featured in the festival:

* Must have a local connection to New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont), meaning that it was filmed there, a cast/crew lives or lived there or was educated in New England. Ask your cast & crew—you can often find an unexpected connection!

* Must be under 30 minutes.

Overall Rating
  • Thanks for accepting Hyphen! Enjoyed the online interview all filmmakers get with their films. They do a great job promoting it online everywhere. is important to New England so I can only wonder how great of an in-person fest this would be.

Hi Maria - Thanks so much for being part of the 2019 festival! We are working on a virtual event for 2020, and all 2019 filmmakers will be invited too. Stay tuned!

The Festival is a good opportunity to be expo'd in New England and the passion of those who run it is apparent, but the communication and overall value of the festival left a little to be desired. The deadlines or announcement dates that were emailed or updated on social media were all incorrect, non-aligned, or delayed. I didn't feel like I got the networking, exposure, or feedback on my project that justified the cost considering the festival is just online. I'll keep submitting in the future, but I think this festival has a lot of areas it could improve on.

    Response from festival:

Michael - Thank you so much for taking the time to give us your thoughts. We received way more submissions this year than the previous year, so it took us a bit longer than expected to make sure we could thoroughly review them fairly—especially since our staff is part-time and volunteer! I apologize for that. We often do in-person networking events with our filmmakers, even though it's an online film festival, and you're certainly welcome to come to those as a festival alum, if you'd like!

  • I've been a part of a few online film festivals, and this has been by far my favorite. I'm very glad to have taken part.
