Massimiliano “Max” Santoro is an Italian writer, anthropologist and video maker whose work moves between research and poetry, reason and emotion. His films explore the invisible architecture of time — how memory, loss, and beauty weave together to reveal the mystery of being human.
He earned his Ph.D. in socio-cultural anthropology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, focusing on the symbolic systems and social imaginaries of modern Europe. Over the years, he has developed a distinctive voice that brings together academic depth and emotional storytelling, translating complex ideas into visual and narrative experiences.
Santoro is the author of the books Il tempo dei padroni and Terre di libertà (FrancoAngeli), in which he investigates the tension between hierarchy, freedom, and imagination in colonial and post-colonial societies. His written work deeply informs his cinematic language: anthropology becomes image, philosophy becomes rhythm, and thought becomes light.
His filmography includes poetic documentaries and experimental shorts such as Thistlegorm 1941–2025: Anatomy of a Wreck, a visual elegy to memory and the sea, and L’Ordine del Tempo, inspired by reflections on quantum physics and the perception of temporal flow. Through these works, Santoro blends scientific intuition with artistic sensibility, creating a cinema that questions perception while celebrating wonder.
Each of his films is conceived as a journey — an act of immersion into landscapes, stories, and states of consciousness. The narrative voice often emerges as an interior monologue, inviting the viewer into a shared space of reflection. Images, sounds, and silences become the grammar of a deeper dialogue about the human experience.
Beyond filmmaking, Santoro is the founder and CEO of Gruppo Prospecta, an Italian organization devoted to human development and organizational culture. As a coach, educator, and speaker, he integrates neuroscience, narrative, and anthropology to explore how people and organizations can change through meaning. He also teaches cultural anthropology at the university level and collaborates with international institutions on leadership and creativity.
Santoro’s artistic research continues to move along the thin border between documentary and introspection, where knowledge becomes emotion and emotion becomes knowledge. His films are not only stories to be watched, but experiences to be felt — small meditations on the relationship between time, matter, and consciousness.
He lives and works in Milan. His films are available on YouTube.
