In the Flashback Habitat contemporary art center complex, a former orphanage and birth clinic, in the tallest building where the ' mater ' sign stands out, the house for auteur and art films is born, which intends to host and welcome the contemporary audiovisual arts movement through screenings, reviews, festivals, exhibitions and editorial projects.

mAFF will host an international selection of 25 short audiovisual works (max 20 min) that represent, interpret or simply pay homage to the archetype of the mother in all its forms.
For the first edition mAFF intends to tell the state of audiovisual art through international authors, artists and directors who discuss the theme mater (MOTHER/MOM) with productions from 2020 to 2025.
Registrations are open to works of fiction, documentary, animation, experimental and video art.

Nel complesso del centro d’arte contemporanea Flashback Habitat, ex brefotrofio e clinica per nascite, nella palazzina più alta dove svetta l’insegna ' mater ', nasce la casa per film d’autore e d’arte che intende ospitare e accogliere il movimento contemporaneo delle arti audiovisive attraverso proiezioni, rassegne, festival, mostre e progetti editoriali.

Il mAFF ospiterà una selezione internazionale di 25 opere audiovisive brevi (max 20 min) che rappresentino, interpretino o semplicemente omaggino l’archetipo della madre in ogni sua forma.
Per la prima edizione mAFF intende raccontare lo stato dell’arte audiovisiva attraverso autori, artisti e registi internazionali che si confrontano sul tema mater (MADRE/MAMMA) con produzione realizzate dal 2020 al 2025.
Le iscrizioni sono aperte a opere di fiction, documentario, animazione, sperimentali e video arte.

Awards & Prizes

During the three days of the festival, the 25 selected films will be screened in the Circolino hall.
The special jury (composed of international artists and creatives in the fields of cinema, art, advertising, fashion, journalism) will award 5 audiovisual works with:

- Grand Prix materAFF Trophy (artwork)
- the exhibition in the video section of Flashback Art Fair (October 30 – November 2, 2025)

Durante i tre giorni del festival verranno proiettati i 25 film selezionati nella sala del Circolino.
La giuria speciale (composta da artisti e creativi di livello internazionale negli ambiti di cinema, arte, pubblicità, moda, giornalismo) premierà 5 opere audiovisive con:

- Grand Prix materAFF Trofeo
- la mostra nella sezione video di Flashback Art Fair (30 ottobre – 2 novembre 2025)

Rules & Terms

The mAFF is open to projects of any format, genre, lasting less than 20 minutes about the topic mater

Short is welcome, video art, documentaries, fiction, music video, reportage, installations, from phone to cinema camera, any frame format, for sound Stereo or more is welcome.

There is a completion date requirement, productions from 2020 to 2025. The festival will, however, consider premiere status and previous screenings when making its selections.

All submissions must be in English or contain burned-in English subtitles.

If selected, you must have one of the following formats available for exhibition at the festival.

High Definition: DCP, Blu-Ray, MP4, H.264, or Quicktime (.mov) file.

Submission Formats: The festival requires just online screener. Any subtitles for digital files must be burned-in; please do not submit separate subtitle files for screening or exhibition.

The festival is an art event and does not pay screening fees. Submitters represent that they have the rights to authorize screening of their film and grant mAFF permission to exhibit the film during the festival if selected and during the art fair if won. Submitters agree to indemnify mAFF and its organizers for any claims resulting from the exhibition of their submission.

Selected films grant permission to use stills up to 2 minutes of footage for the purpose of promoting the festival, in addition to any trailer for the film.
