Born and raised in New York and based in Los Angeles, Kim Watson is an award-winning filmmaker, author, photographer, and composer whose work spans more than two decades. Guided by a belief in art as a catalyst for social change, Watson has written and directed across television, film, advertising, and digital media for major Hollywood studios and platforms.
As a director, Watson has helmed over 30 music videos, collaborating with iconic, Grammy-winning artists including Anderson .Paak, Al Jarreau, and hip-hop pioneer Roxanne Shanté. His visual depictions of Black life and culture earned recognition from the NAACP New York Chapter. Through filmmaking, photography, and writing, Watson has documented the lived experiences of marginalized communities—from the Caribbean to Nigeria, from the Pine Ridge Reservation to the streets of Los Angeles—approaching each story with aesthetic rigor, emotional depth, and a profound commitment to shared humanity. His work is marked by beauty, authenticity, and compassion, inviting audiences into difficult realities with dignity and understanding.
Watson’s feature-length documentary TRESPASS follows his award-winning 2024 Broadleaf Books publication, TRESPASS: Portraits of Unhoused Life, Love, and Understanding. The book is an intimate collection of photography and prose, exploring Watson’s deeply personal relationships with unhoused individuals living at society’s margins. The documentary, shaped by five years embedded on the streets of Los Angeles, unites Watson’s filmmaking, writing, striking portraits, and original score to illuminate the complexity of homelessness and the broader human condition.
Conceived as a “poem” or meditation rather than a conventional documentary, TRESPASS resists traditional narrative structures in favor of an immersive, sensory-driven experience. Dedicated to dispelling myths and preconceptions, the film captures the emotional truth of its subjects, engaging audiences on a deeply human level and leaving a lasting, transformative impression.
TRESPASS has screened at the Teaneck International Film Festival and the 2026 Pan African Film Festival. Watson is honored to have Tasha Smith as Executive Producer. An acclaimed actress, producer, and director, she brings a long history of community engagement and socially impactful storytelling to the project.
Watson’s photography has also been exhibited in solo shows in Los Angeles, Oakland, and at Harlem’s prestigious Essie Green Galleries.
Beyond his creative practice, Watson has served on multiple nonprofit boards and consulted on PBS’s Independent Lens slate of social justice–focused films. He has lectured at institutions including USC and Occidental College and will teach Screenwriting at UCLA in Spring 2026.
