The Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (kimff) is Nepal's longest-running and largest film festival with an estimated 8000 people attending back-to-back screenings of 50 - 60 films over five days. Since 2000, kimff has brought a diverse array of films from around the world to Nepali audiences, focusing on mountain communities and cultures. The festival has screened hundreds of films and facilitated discussions addressing a range of issues, from the political resilience of mountain communities to the rise of identity politics in adventure sports, and the impacts of climate change on mountainous regions. The festival now showcases a spectrum of documentaries, adventure cinema, experimental shorts, anthropological narratives, animation and feature films from the Himalayan region as well as other parts of the world, spotlighting films of human interest and exceptional uniqueness, to foster a culture of creativity and original storytelling in line with kimff's mission 'Bridging Cultures and Societies through the Power of Story'.

In the presence of filmmakers, film enthusiasts, critics, scholars, authors, journalists, artists, activists and mountaineers, the festival includes discussion forums, master classes, pitches, labs, exhibitions and workshops and creates space for much-needed cross cultural exchange.

In 2007, kimff expanded its scope to include both fiction and non-fiction Nepali films, creating a dedicated platform 'Nepal Panorama'. It serves as a space where aspiring and experienced Nepali filmmakers explore and depict the political and cultural landscape of Nepal through the lens of visual storytelling.

kimff works with local and international partners and sponsors, notably with the Film Development Board of Nepal, Nepal Tourism Board, Nepal Mountaineering Association and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). As the cosmopolitan and cultural heart of the Himalayan region, Kathmandu City has been recognised as a Creative City of Film by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network since November 2023.

kimff is organized by the KIMFF Foundation, a private, not-for-profit sharing company dedicated to cultivating an informed, dynamic and resilient Nepali society.
