My name is Kaat Vanbaelen. I am 27 years old and live in a small village in the countryside of Limburg (Wijshagen) with my mother, brother, our cats Coco and Chanel, our sheep Odette, Lisette and Janine, our donkey Emma, and our chicken Josefien.
I have always had a passion for storytelling. At the age of 8, I was determined to become a horror filmmaker. However, during my time at LUCA, I discovered a profound love for comedy— the more tragic and absurd, the better. In recent years, I have focused on honing my skills as a
screenwriter. This journey included a semester of screenwriting courses at FAMU in Prague, as well as workshops with John Yorke and Neil Andrew Taylor. Additionally, I completed internships as a storyliner at Banijay Belgium and as a co-script coach at The Story Department with Karel Segers, and I continue to write for both companies. In addition to this, I am also working on my own comedy series and am about to co-write an animated comedy series with Lars Damoiseaux.
My passion for storytelling stems from always feeling a little different from others. This has never made me insecure—quite the opposite. I’ve always felt the need to share my vivid imagination and open mindset with others, offering new perspectives. I prefer to do this by first disarming my audience with comedy, then moving them with drama. My goal is to confront them with problematic behaviors in an engaging way, but also to surprise them with authentic, thought-provoking solutions.
Always ready for adventure, I feel most comfortable when outside of my comfort zone!
I love pizza, cowboys, and muskrats.
I believe that aliens exist, and so do witches.
My friends call me the dissolute dreamer, a source of endless imagination.
