Justin Meckes wrote and directed a short film titled "Balloon Animals" that was featured on IFC's "Media Lab Shorts Uploaded" in 2005. Other shorts he directed around this time appeared in film festivals in Knoxville, TN, and Durham, NC. He returned to filmmaking with "54 Stones" in 2019.

This short documentary appeared in several regional festivals and won Best Documentary Short in the Stranger Days Independent Film Festival in Charlotte, NC. The next year, he completed a documentary titled "Comic Book Hero" and two other shorts, "The Hot Air Balloon" and "The Pharmacon."
