Josh Funk is a filmmaker, animator, and songwriter whose work bridges the worlds of music, puppetry, and cinema. He began his creative career writing and releasing independent music, including several solo albums along with projects like Farewell Letter and Made It to Midnight. His musical background shapes the rhythmic pacing, tonal shifts, and emotional textures of his films, which often blend sweet, melodic themes with eerie and unsettling undercurrents.
His work often examines children’s television as an artifact, bright and tactile on the surface yet capable of revealing the uncanny beneath. Working across stop-motion, 2D, and experimental animation, Funk builds handmade worlds where humor and horror coexist, inviting audiences into spaces that are both playful and disquieting.
Funk’s films have screened internationally at festivals including the SciFi Film Festival, Grimmfest, Another Hole in the Head, the Atlanta Underground Film Festival, and FilmQuest. His award-winning shorts 3 Keys and The Fuzzies have earned recognition for their distinctive blend of genre, craft, and musicality. The latter was expanded into a feature film in 2025, with Funk co-composing the original score and soundtrack.
He holds an MFA in Visual Art from Lesley University and a BA in Art Studio from California State University, Chico.
